action

In 2419, Ed Mercer took command of the Orville research spacecraft . With his crew consisting of humans and aliens, he is now supposed to endure various adventures. This is a promising new beginning for Mercer, who has just been divorced, but then his ex-wife of all people is assigned as first officer.

species

Calivon

The Calivon live in a forbidden sector of space and maintain a space zoo where other, more primitive species are kept as exhibits. The Calivon only maintain contact with species that are at a similar level of development.

jelly

Jellies are made entirely of a gelatinous substance. Their bodies can take any physical form. They are asexual and reproduce through mitosis , but still identify as male and female.

Invalid

The Inval are a humanoid species whose blood is highly explosive in contact with nitrogen. There is therefore an agreement that prohibits the invalids from meeting the Union.

Kaylon

The Kaylon are an artificial, mechanical species. Because of their physiology, they consider themselves superior to biological species. Their appearance is basically humanoid (2 arms, 2 legs, 1 head with two luminous points instead of the eyes).

Katrudian

The Katrudian are a very talkative flower-like species.

Krill

The krill are a militant and authoritarian organized, reptilian species, which is in constant conflict with the Planetary Union. In addition to their aggressiveness and religious fundamentalism, they are characterized by an unusually strong sensitivity to light.

Moclaner

The Moclaner are a warlike species that officially consists of men only. Moclaners lay eggs that are incubated for 21 days. As a rule, this results in a male offspring, but it is said that on average every 75 years a female newborn is born, which is immediately re-operated as a man. In fact, there is a secret colony with over 6,000 Moclan women. The Moclaner economy specializes in weapon development.

Regorians

The residents of Regor 2 are humanoids on the technological level to be able to send messages into space. The first contact with the Union reveals that its value system is based on astrology .

Retepsians

The Retepsians are a species with the ability to send out very strong pheromones . In Retepsian culture, it is considered impolite to decline offers to have sexual intercourse.

Shak'tal

After the krill began to annex worlds of the Shak'tal, as they saw themselves right to do so because of their religion, the Shak'tal became bitter enemies of the krill, who never leave survivors after fighting. They seem to be at least equal to the krill.

Xelayans

The Xelayans inhabit a planet on which the force of gravity is many times higher than on Earth. As a result, Xelayans are stronger and faster than other species in environments that are adapted to the earth. With the exception of the ears and the hook-like bulges on the nose and forehead, they look like people.

Cast and dubbing

The German synchronization arises after dialogue books by Katrin Kabbathas and the dialogue director of Harald Wolff by the synchronous company Cinephon Filmproduktion GmbH in Berlin .

production

For Seth MacFarlane , a childhood dream came true with the production of the series. He's a big fan of shows like Star Trek and The Twilight Zone and has long wanted to be on a similar project. In May 2016, Fox gave the project the green light and ordered a first season with 13 episodes. Production of the pilot episode began in late 2016. Filming for the other episodes began in spring 2017 and ended on August 23, 2017. The US broadcast began on September 10, 2017 on Fox. The first two episodes were shown following an NFL football broadcast . Due to timing reasons, only twelve episodes were broadcast; the thirteenth appeared as part of the second season.

References to Star Trek

The concept of the series is based on that of Raumschiff Enterprise and its successor series. Several Star Trek veterans including Brannon Braga , Jonathan Frakes and Robert Duncan McNeill have been involved in directing The Orville . Penny Johnson Jerald, who played Dr. Finn, has appeared on an episode of Starship Enterprise and a recurring supporting role in Star Trek: Deep Space Nine . Scott Grimes, starring Gordon Malloy, made a guest appearance on the third season of Starship Enterprise in 1989 . However, two dialogue scenes with him fell victim to the cut, so that in the final version there was only one extra appearance. Robert Picardo , the holographic doctor from Star Trek: Spaceship Voyager , can be seen in two episodes in a guest role as the father of Alara Kitan. Likewise, John Billingsley , starring Doctor Phlox from Star Trek: Enterprise , Tim Russ , starring Tuvok in Star Trek: Spaceship Voyager, and Marina Sirtis , starring Counselor Deanna Troi from Spaceship Enterprise - The Next Century, also made a guest appearance in Season 2. Numerous Supporting roles were filled with former supporting roles from the Star Trek series.

reception

Björn Sülter from the industry portal Serienjunkies.de awarded 3.5 out of 5 stars for the episode “Old Wounds” at the start of the series and described the series as “damn funny”. He also found that "not every gag" hits, "some characters are still rudimentary drawn and the plot of the prelude is well known". But the "retro charm [...], many moments to smile and a heart in the right place" made up for it.

In June 2019 Björn Sülter describes the second season as "funnier" and "even better", this time forquotemeter.de. The series, which was initially advertised as a slapstick, therefore "grew up" with the second season.
