Fahrid Murray Abraham (born October 24, 1939 in Pittsburgh , Pennsylvania ) is an American actor . For his role as Antonio Salieri in the drama Amadeus , he received several awards, including an Oscar and a Golden Globe Award .

Life

Abraham is the son of an Assyrian / Aramaic father and an Italian mother. He grew up in El Paso , Texas . His father, an auto mechanic, immigrated to the United States from Syria around 1920 . His grandfather was a choirmaster in the Syrian Orthodox Church . After studying at the University of Texas at El Paso , Abraham took acting lessons from Uta Hagen and worked at various theaters . He also appeared in several television films and commercials .

In 1976 he played a supporting role in Alan J. Pakula's film about the Watergate Affair , The Untouchables , starring Dustin Hoffman and Robert Redford as journalists Carl Bernstein and Bob Woodward . In 1983 he played the drug gangster Omar Suárez in Brian De Palma's Scarface in Miami. The artistic breakthrough came in 1984 with his portrayal of Abraham Mozart - adversary Antonio Salieri in Milos Forman's Amadeus . For this role he received an Oscar for best leading actor and thus prevailed against the also nominated Mozart actor Tom Hulce .

Since then he has played “rogue roles” such as in the film adaptation of Umberto Eco's novel The Name of the Rose, the medieval inquisitor Bernard Gui and a paranoid prosecutor in the film satire Purgatory of the Vanities after Tom Wolfe . In comedies such as Loaded Weapon 1 and Last Action Hero , he poked fun at his villain image with a lot of self-irony . In 1995 he appeared in a supporting role in Woody Allen's comedy Beloved Aphrodite . In the meantime, he is increasingly taking on differentiated character roles in film and television productions.

In addition to his film appearances, Abraham has also played theater mainly in New York since the 1960s . He stood in 1988 in Waiting for Godot by Samuel Beckett , together with the comedians Robin Williams and Steve Martin on stage. Also off-Broadway he played King Lear in 1996 , Shylock in Merchant of Venice in 2007 and Barabas in The Jew of Malta . The Galileo Galilei portrayed Abraham in 2012 in the same piece of Bertolt Brecht . In 2014 he appeared in the comedy It's Only a Play directed by Terrence McNally, opposite Matthew Broderick and Nathan Lane . Since 2012 he has appeared on the drama series Homeland , both as a leading and supporting actor, in the role of Dar Adal .

Abraham has been married since 1962 and has two children.
