Thomas Ostermeier (born September 3, 1968 in Soltau ) is a German theater director .

Life

From 1990 to 1991 Ostermeier was an actor in Einar Schleef's Faust project at the Berlin University of the Arts . From 1992 to 1996 he studied directing at the Ernst Busch Academy of Dramatic Art in Berlin . From 1993 to 1994 he was Manfred Karge's assistant at the Berliner Ensemble . From 1996 to 1999 he was artistic director and director at the barracks at the Deutsches Theater Berlin . In 1998, the barracks at the Deutsches Theater were voted theater of the year in the critics' poll of the magazine Theater heute . He has directed at the Deutsches Theater Berlin , the Deutsches Schauspielhaus Hamburg, the Münchner Kammerspiele , the Burgtheater Vienna and the Comédie-Française in Paris.

In a modification of Stanislawski's method acting , Ostermeier developed his own method of so-called storytelling for his rehearsals. The actors are asked by him to approach a certain topic of the stage material in given role plays from their own experiences or current experience.

Ostermeier has received numerous awards. In 1998, 2003, 2006, 2008 and 2018 he was invited to the Berlin Theatertreffen . In 1997 and 2011 he received the Friedrich-Luft-Preis . In 2003 he was awarded the Vienna Nestroy Theater Prize. In 2009 and 2015 he was awarded the Ordre des Arts et des Lettres . In 2011 he was awarded the Golden Lion at the Venice Biennale .

Ostermeier has been artistic director and director at the Schaubühne Berlin since 1999 . From 2010 to 2018 he was President of the Franco-German Cultural Council. He is a member of the German Academy of Performing Arts and since 2019 a member of the Academy of Arts, Berlin .
