Enda Walsh

Enda Walsh (* 1967 in Dublin ) is an Irish playwright and radio play writer .

Life

Enda Walsh grew up as the son of a furniture dealer in North Dublin and attended the Greendale Community School there. The writer Roddy Doyle was one of his teachers there. After graduating from high school, he studied film in Dublin and London . In 1991 he moved to Cork and worked as a playwright in the Corcadora Theater Company founded by director Pat Kiernan . With his third drama Disco Pigs , which premiered in 1996 and was filmed by Kirsten Sheridan in 2001 , he made his European breakthrough as a playwright. Due to overwork, Walsh suffered from severe fatigue syndrome in 1999, from which he recovered. For his play The New Electric Ballroom , which premiered at the Münchner Kammerspiele in 2004 , the German-speaking theater critics voted him “Foreign Dramatist of the Year 2005”.

In addition to his work as a theater, radio and screenwriter, Walsh also works as an actor and director. He gave the world premiere of his play Misterman himself and in 2005 staged the German-language premiere of Chatroom at the Münchner Kammerspiele .

Walsh is married and lives in London with his wife.
