Theater der Zeit (TdZ) is a German-language monthly magazine with a focus on theater and politics. It was founded in 1946 in Berlin (East) and, along with theater, is now one of the leading theater magazines in German-speaking countries. Since 1996 books have been published by the book publisher of the same name.

history

The publisher Bruno Henschel & Sohn (later Henschelverlag Kunst und Gesellschaft ), founded in summer 1945, commissioned the journalist Fritz Erpenbeck to found a theater magazine in the spring of 1946 . In July 1946, the first number of Theater der Zeit appeared on the title page with Max Reinhardt , the leading article by Fritz Erpenbeck was entitled "Zeittheater oder Theater der Zeit?"

The magazine was published monthly until March 1992, in between in short phases in the early 1950s and early 1960s also semi-monthly. While the theater of the time primarily served to provide information about theater in the GDR and abroad, at the beginning of the 1950s the magazine increasingly came under the ideological influence of the State Commission for Art Affairs , the forerunner of the GDR's Ministry of Culture . It was only after the de-Stalinization in the mid-1950s that the magazine opened to critical discussions, insofar as political control allowed it.

With the establishment of the Association of Theater Makers in December 1966, which was supposed to discipline the theater scene in the GDR through self-regulation in the sense of socialist ideology, the editing of Theater der Zeit also passed to the association. The Henschel Verlag remained responsible for personnel, printing and sales. While the political pressure on the magazine increased, the editors were able to network more intensively with theater life by taking part in colloquia, festivals and trips abroad. As a result, “Theater der Zeit” gained greater practical relevance, which contributed to its increasing reputation and higher editions in the 1970s and 1980s.

After the political change , the editorial team chose Martin Linzer as a new editor-in-chief. While the proximity to theater practice was to be maintained, the magazine slowly opened up to the theater scene in the old federal states . Nevertheless, a drastic drop in circulation could not be prevented. The discontinued subsidies from the GDR's Ministry of Culture could not be compensated for by staff cuts, price increases and a new layout. With the March 1992 issue, the Henschel Verlag had to discontinue the magazine.

In May 1992 some former employees founded the interest group Theater der Zeit e. V. , which published the first edition of “Theater der Zeit. Die Zeitschrift für Theater und Politik ”under the editorial direction of Martin Linzer. The completely redesigned magazine was initially published every two months, and has been published monthly since the beginning of 2000. The magazine's advisory board now includes artists and scientists such as Friedrich Dieckmann , Erika Fischer-Lichte and Heiner Goebbels . The editorial team was jointly headed by Harald Müller and Frank M. Raddatz from 2007 to 2014 ; since August 2014 Harald Müller.

Today's theater is one of the most important media in the industry. In addition to the regular editions, there are also special publications, such as an edition that campaigned in July 2008 for the preservation of the Berlin State Opera based on a design by Richard Paulick .
