Mark Ravenhill (born June 7, 1966 in Haywards Heath , West Sussex , England ) is a British playwright, dramaturge and theater director . He is one of the most popular playwrights in modern British theater and the in-yer-face theater .

Life

Ravenhill graduated from 1984 to 1987 with a degree in drama and English from the Drama Department of Bristol University . In the following years he worked at the Soho Poly Theater, as a freelance teacher and as a director. The British theater of the 1990s, which Thomas Ostermeier in particular - first at the barracks of the Deutsches Theater, then at the Schaubühne on Lehniner Platz Berlin - made famous in Germany, is primarily associated with his name and that of Sarah Kane .

His first own pieces Fist (1995) and His Mouth (1995) were shown on various London Fringe stages as well as on Off-Off-Broadway. He also worked for BBC radio play versions of Frank Wedekind's Lulu and Alexander Ostrowskijs Great Money ( Mad Money ). The first full-length play from his pen, Shoppen & Ficken ( Shopping & Fucking ), premiered in October 1996 at London's Royal Court Theater.

His second play, Faust is dead ( Faust is Dead ), had its premiere in February 1997 at London's Lyric Theater. The joint project Sleeping Around , which Ravenhill developed together with Hilary Fannin , Stephen Greenhorn and Abi Morgan , premiered in March 1998 at the Donmar Warehouse in London . Ravenhill also released other plays: Handbag (1998), which is based on The Importance of Being Earnest by Oscar Wilde , Some Explicit Polaroids (1999), which premiered in 1999 at the New Ambassadors Theater in London, and Mother Clap's Molly House (2000) , which he developed together with some students and which saw its world premiere in 2001 at the National Theater (London) in a professional theater. Around 2005 a new phase in Ravenhill's work emerged: the pieces became more abstract and made use of post-dramatic theater techniques. In 2005, Ravenhill himself starred in the world premiere of the one-person play Product at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival. The Cut , a dystopia about repressive (or maybe normal?) Societies, premiered in 2006 . In November of that year, Pool (No Water) , a satire on the art world and an analysis of friendship, came out at the Lyric Theater Hammersmith. Ravenhill also wrote a panto for the Barbican Theater in 2006, Dick Whittington and His Cat .

He is currently Chief Dramaturg (Literary Manager) for the Paines Plow Theater Company and lives in London .
