action

Long ago a cat-loving clan in Japan tried to kill all dogs. However, when it was remembered that they could also protect people, they were made pets, but also mocked them.

Many years later, in the Japanese archipelago, 20 years after the present day. After an outbreak of dog flu, known as snout fever, all dogs from Megasaki City are banished to the remote island of Trash Island. Mayor Kobayashi also issued an emergency ordinance because the animals allegedly spread fleas in the city. Only one scientist defends the dogs, reminds of the previous good relationship between humans and animals and explains that they are working on a serum against the epidemic. The first dog to be deported to the island is Spots, the watchdog of Kobayashi's own ward, Atari. He is brought to the island in a cage with a cable car system, where there only seem to be rats.

Six months later there are many thousands of dogs on Trash Island. Due to their illness, the animals are emaciated and extremely aggressive. They have formed packs and fight each other over leftover food, which is also brought to the island as garbage, no matter how rotten. Chief, who feels called to be the leader of his group, has teamed up with the dogs King, Rex, Boss and Duke. Chief was a stray much of his life , but the other dogs were baseball team mascots, advertised dog food, or just had a comfortable life before. Chief tries to remind his pack, in which all have imposing names, that they are all alpha dogs that are not supposed to lick their wounds, but fight for their survival.

One day there is a crash landing on Trash Island. A young boy has flown to the island to look for his lost dog. The 12-year-old is Atari Kobayashi, the mayor's ward, who crossed the separating waters with a strange aircraft, a hijacked turbo prop , to get to the exile colony, where he suspects spots. The pack around Chief quickly understands what the boy is looking for when he shows them a photo of his beloved four-legged friend. They take him to a locked transport cage, which only contains a dog's skeleton. Atari wants to leave the island again, but then the pack realizes his mistake. Another dog's skeleton was in the cage, so they set out to find Atari's bodyguard dog. Chief doesn't really want to help, but the others in his pack just overrule him.

On the mainland, the scientist is working on a serum that can not only heal the dogs, but also reduce their ability to reproduce. He succeeds, but is first placed under house arrest and later poisoned. At the same time, the members of a school newspaper try to bring the truth about the snout fever to light. American exchange student Tracy believes in a large-scale conspiracy. The mayor, who now knows that Atari is on the island, meanwhile wants to get his ward back and sends a team of dog catchers there. However, together they can fend off this. Chief and Atari get closer when the boy washes the black dirt out of the dog's fur with the dog shampoo he had brought with him, revealing his actually white fur.

Mayor Kobayashi runs for re-election in Megasaki City

You go to Jupiter, a wise dog who knows about spots, knows him as dog number 1 and also knows his whereabouts. Although they are separated on the way to a remote part of the island where there are supposed to be spots, the animal catcher finally rescued his four-legged friend in a second attack. Spots is now the leader of a group of ex- laboratory animals that were left there long before the systematic deportation of dogs to Trash Island began. They had freed him from the transport cage with a universal key. He recognizes Chief as his brother, thanks in particular to Atari's fur wash.

On the mainland, a hacker of the school newspaper was able to get the black box of Atari's aircraft into his possession and spread his last will. Tracy receives the last remaining bottle of the developed serum from a former colleague of the murdered scientist and leads a group by storm at an event at which Mayor Kobayashi's re-election is to be celebrated. The Atari, who came to the mainland with a self-made raft, also appears, accompanied by spots and chief, on which he can demonstrate that the serum actually works. After Mayor Kobayashi lifts the emergency ordinance and, like many others involved in the conspiracy, goes to jail, Atari becomes the new mayor of Megasaki City.

production

Main production, set design and characters

Directed by Wes Anderson , who also wrote the screenplay for the film. Anderson had previously directed several modern classics such as The Royal Tenenbaums , Darjeeling Limited and Grand Budapest Hotel , but had also produced an animated film with the Roald Dahl film adaptation of The Fantastic Mr. Fox . Anderson reveals that the style model for Isle of Dogs is the work of Japanese film director Akira Kurosawa , in which dogs are, however, rather rare. The story was co-developed by Roman Coppola , Jason Schwartzman and Kunichi Nomura . Anderson worked with cameraman Tristan Oliver , production designers Adam Stockhausen and Paul Harrod, and art director Curt Enderle . Oliver was most recently active in this role for the animated crime film Loving Vincent .

In March 2018, an exhibition opened in The Store X at 180 The Strand in London, in which the originals of the set were shown. Here Megasaki City in a model

Production started in England in October 2016. Regarding the structure of the film, Anke Westphal from epd Film explains that the structure is based on comics in chapters, and inserts define various temporal levels for the viewer, such as “flashback” and “end of flashback”. Westphal is particularly impressed by the perfect aesthetic stylization, which is already given by the framework of the Japanese cultural area, but which is driven further by the exhibition of the narrative media. Not only the figures animated in stop-motion technology, but also silhouettes or even collage-like images testify to the richness of the genre. Two Japanese masters of color woodcut from the 19th century, Utagawa Hiroshige and Katsushika Hokusai , inspired the script team, Westphal continues. Tobias Fouracre acted as animation supervisor and already worked for Anderson's Fantastic Mr. Fox .

For the conception and subsequent completion of the film, the makers needed almost two years. In order to bring the multitude of characters to life, computer effects were used, but haptic sets were also built. For the production design, they worked with the model maker Simon Weisse from the Berlin Miniature Unit. This is how the miniature sets were made in Berlin. Weisse worked for many years with the Babelsberg studio , which co-produced the film. During the hot phase, Weisse sent the director an email every day with pictures of the current status quo. The finished backdrops were then delivered to London by a haulage company and joined there with the other sets. The Swiss film critic Cornelis Hähnel believes that the stop-motion world that emerged this time was markedly more influenced by a Japanese aesthetic and was lovingly animated down to the smallest detail, regardless of whether it was clouds made of cotton wool or water made of cellophane, making familiar materials cinematic with an anachronistic charm Backdrops would.

Some of the animators were solely responsible for the dogs, while others focused on the people. Puppet maker Andy Gent stated that Isle of Dogs used more than 900 figures, which is the largest number of dolls ever made without a 3D printer for a stop motion movie. The dolls were built on fittings equipped with joints, made of metal frameworks. These were covered with silicone with the help of molds, then painted and given animal hair. Many of the characters have interchangeable faces. The production was funded with 300,000 euros by the Medienboard Berlin-Brandenburg . It also received a distribution grant of 80,000 euros from the latter and 100,000 euros from the film funding agency. In March 2018, an exhibition was opened at The Store X at 180 The Strand in London, in which the originals of the set and the figures used in the stop-motion film were shown.

Film music and publication

The score was composed by Alexandre Desplat . Desplat and Anderson last collaborated for the 2014 film Grand Budapest Hotel . Desplat worked on the recording with the West Coast Pop Art Experimental Band and the Sauter-Finegan Orchestra , the Toho Symphony Orchestra, multi-instrumentalists David Mansfield and Kaoru Watanabe. In addition to Japanese shamisen sounds, taiko drums were also used during the recording , as in the piece Taiko Drumming , which like to be powerful and heralds disaster or at least a worsening situation, as Tim Caspar Boehme from taz in his review of the film noticed.

A soundtrack with 22 pieces of music, which in addition to the film music by Desplat also contains pieces from the Japanese films The Seven Samurai and Angels of the Lost , was released by ABKCO Records on March 23, 2018. A first trailer for the film was the song I Won't Hurt You by the West Coast Pop Art Experimental Band, which is also included on the soundtrack.

On December 23, 2016, it was announced that Fox Searchlight Pictures had secured the worldwide distribution rights for the film. In January 2018, as part of the New Frontier series of the Sundance Film Festival, a behind-the-scenes special was presented in which viewers enter a virtual reality miniature world , follow interviews with the speakers and the rest of the film crew at work on the animated film. In a featurette published in March 2018, the dogs tell of their fate.

Isle of Dogs - Atari's Reise celebrated its premiere on February 15, 2018 as the opening film of the Berlin International Film Festival . It was shown as a graduation film at the South by Southwest Film Festival 2018 . The film was released in selected US cinemas on March 23, 2018 and nationwide on April 13, 2018. The theatrical release in Germany took place on May 10, 2018, in China on April 20, 2018. The film was also to be shown in Saudi Arabia, and would have been one of the first films to be released there in decades after in movie theaters were banned in the country since the 1980s. In September 2018, the Behind The Scenes of the film was presented in the “Virtual Reality” section of the Venice Film Festival .

reception

Age rating

In the US, the film was rated PG-13 by the MPAA . In Germany it was approved by the FSK from the age of 6. In the statement of reasons for the release it says: “There are numerous fight scenes, but they are heavily comic-like and sometimes bizarre. Occasionally there are also threatening scenes as well as topics that may represent an emotional challenge for children from 6 years of age (e.g. a planned "mass execution" of the dogs, which however does not occur). However, excessive demands cannot be assumed. Numerous humorous scenes, the strong main characters and the happy ending give children of primary school age enough opportunity to relax. "

Particularly highlighted by the jury of the German Film and Media Assessment : the dogs that were designed and animated with attention to detail

Anke Westphal from epd Film notes that the film is more likely to be intended for adults. Ultimately, he tells a story about friendship , loyalty and fearlessness when he asks who we humans are and how we want to be as a society. But above all, the film is a rejection of intolerance , according to Westphal.

In the justification of the jury of the German film and media evaluation , from which the Isle of Dogs was awarded the title Particularly Valuable , it says about the topics addressed beyond the pure story such as illness , persecution, deportation and euthanasia , these are so clever next to the The film was given its own bizarre comedy that never seemed out of place. Furthermore, the verdict on the dogs, which were designed and animated with great care and attention to detail, says that their humanization is more limited than is otherwise usual in animated films with animals, and the characters, even when they speak, remain dogs, which is especially true in their genre-typical looks and movements show: "Not only in this regard will the film appeal to dog lovers, the content of the film also makes a warm-hearted plea for dogs."

Reviews and grossing results

Wes Anderson , here at a press conference during the 2018 Berlinale , directed

The film was able to convince 90 percent of the critics at Rotten Tomatoes and received an average rating of 8 out of a possible 10 points. Isle of Dogs - Atari's journey also led the international critics of the British specialist magazine Screen International for all 19 Berlinale competition films with 3.3 out of four possible stars .

Fabian Wallmeier from RBB 24 says that the waxen faces of the people and the shadow play of the dogs in front of the matt, colorful shimmering garbage backdrop look stylish and are lovingly made, but with some of the exuberant details you can imagine how great they would have looked if Wes Anderson had actually had them built by his set design artists, such as the former amusement park, the Atari and the dogs. Wallmeier sums up that the fight of good against evil takes itself unusually seriously by Anderson's standards and is in the end too banal, since the director is simply used to more ambiguity, irony and ultimately originality: “As a light, entertaining opening film of the Berlinale works Isle of Dogs well - also because it provides a blow for at least as many stars on the red carpet, as expected for all the rest of the competition. But this nice, but disappointing film compared to Anderson's previous work is not a hot bear candidate . "

For Andreas Borcholte from Spiegel Online , Isle of Dogs was the perfect film to mark the opening of the Berlin Film Festival, and Anderson tells “a hearty story about intolerance towards other races and the weaker. Mayor Kobayashi, who cheats in the elections, scares the people with fake news about the dog epidemic and threatens big posters like a fascist big brother , is the descendant of a dynasty of cat lovers who dislike anything doggy. ”Political peaks against monstrous Populists like Trump and an age of disinformation are apparently wanted, Borcholte continues, even if you can feel that Anderson, by no means a political director, was actually more about the artistic finger exercise of trying out his detailed, symmetrical imagery with other means .

Patrick Brzeski of The Hollywood Reporter , on the other hand, reminds Trash Island of the island of Miyajima, which is populated by sika deer
Isle of Dogs (26306645067) .jpg
In the film, however, the dogs on Trash Island have to feed on the garbage

Anke Westphal from epd Film thinks that Anderson paints the picture of a totalitarian society in his film, whose rulers determine by decree about membership or exclusion of members, which is why quite a few viewers remember the dealings with refugees or even more the persecution of Jews in Nazi Germany will feel. In fact, the latter is not just an association if at some point a dog concentration camp comes into the picture, which reminds of the Auschwitz extermination camp in the design of its entrance gate and in Kobayashi's local plans : “This is strong stuff; perhaps this excessive clarity should not have been necessary. "

Dorothee Krings judged in the Rheinische Post that the film was a “committed parable in apparently smoothly drawn pictures, which tells of the manipulability of people, even within democracies.” Despite its allusions to Japanese high culture and its “finely drawn dog types “Some lengths, but is an“ exciting project ”when it comes to the“ political charge ”of the animation film genre . Also Verena Lueken in the Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung describes the film as a parable of a world fascist purity and Exklusionsideen, and as such it is not difficult to understand. The lovingly crafted stop-motion film is a film for the whole family, Lueken continues, if the family likes children and dogs.

In Freitag it is explained that Wes Anderson shows in his film the exact working method for the formation of a fascist dictatorship by a power-hungry, dog-hating emperor who wants to underpin his path to fascist autocracy with the extermination of the hated species. The film draws its charm from the contrast between animated narrative ease and the brutality of the plot, which also cites figuratively and conceptually well-known topoi such as euthanasia and deportation . In between there is slapstick-like humor, dialogues that are reminiscent of Ernst Lubitsch, and childlike joy in playing.

Patrick Brzeski of The Hollywood Reporter reminds Trash Island, the main setting of the film, of the island of Miyajima , about twenty kilometers southwest of Hiroshima, just off the coast of Honshu. The island is populated by many animals, including hundreds of sika deer , who sneak around the tourists in hopes of a snack.

Wall Street Journal's Joe Morgenstern says Anderson's stop-motion film doesn't look or sound like anything you've seen before, including his previous stop-motion film The Fantastic Mr. Fox , which was also wonderful has been.

Susanne Mayer from Zeit Online thinks that the resulting scenes live from contrasts: “Between gray blocks of rubbish, the dogs fantasize about the luxury of their better days, down baskets or stylish bowls with chili con carne, plus vitamin sprinkles. While they prepare to fight like the black riders, the wind gently tousled through the sticky fur. In the respite before the attack, clouds of dust dance like cotton balls over the poisonous soil. There has never been more beautiful animation. "

In the USA, where the film was released on March 23, 2018, it got off to a strong start with $ 1.57 million in 27 cinemas (average $ 58,148) and has so far played 31.9 million US dollars. After it launched nationwide on April 13, 2018. The worldwide revenue from cinema shows is $ 64.1 million. In Germany, the film has so far recorded 104,389 visitors.

Use in school lessons

The online portal kinofenster.de recommends Isle of Dogs for the subjects of media studies , art , English, German and ethics and offers materials for the film for the classroom. Christian Horn writes there that the characters' social interactions offer content-related points of contact for language lessons, since the communication barrier between dogs and people makes mutual acceptance more difficult. In addition, the film takes up current social and political issues, such as environmental pollution, the fate of refugees, the consequences of dictatorship and propaganda as well as fake news and thus offers material for further discussions.
