Rushmore is an American comedy film directed by Wes Anderson from the year 1998 .

action

The 15-year-old eccentric Max Fischer attends the 10th grade of the renowned private school Rushmore. He is a dedicated student who writes plays and participates in numerous projects and groups. However, his grades fall far short of the expectations of his teachers and Max is not very popular with his classmates either. In the successful but depressed businessman Herman Blume he finds a sponsor and friend.

One day Max meets the widowed preschool teacher Rosemary Cross and falls in love with her. Despite the great age difference, he begins to woo Miss Cross by all means. When, for her sake, he tries to lay the foundation stone for an unauthorized large aquarium on the school's baseball field, he is thrown from the school.

When Herman Blume starts an affair with Miss Cross, the former friends become enemies and a bitter guerrilla war breaks out. Only when their relationship breaks up does a reconciliation come about.

background

The cost of producing the film was approximately $ 20 million. Wes Anderson had auditions held at several private schools in New England to find a suitable lead actor. Ultimately, they decided on Jason Schwartzman, a nephew of Francis Ford Coppola , who was then the drummer of the band Phantom Planet . Bill Murray liked the script of the film so much that he said he would have worked without pay.

Filming took place at four different schools in Houston , Texas, including Wes Anderson's former high school. The future actress Alexis Bledel took on an extra role in several scenes because she was attending one of these schools at the time. Owen Wilson, who co-wrote the script and often appears in Anderson's films, can be seen in some of the photos in Rushmore as Miss Cross' late husband. His brother Luke Wilson also makes a brief appearance.

The score for the film comes largely from musicians from the so-called British Invasion , including The Rolling Stones , The Who , The Kinks , Cat Stevens , Donovan and John Lennon . Originally, the soundtrack should consist exclusively of songs by the band The Kinks.

Rushmore premiered on September 17, 1998 at the Toronto International Film Festival and was released in American theaters on February 5, 1999. In Germany the film was only shown two years later. In total, he grossed around $ 17 million in the United States.

The film is quoted in songs and music videos by the bands My Chemical Romance , Fall Out Boy , The Decemberists , Brand New and Motion City Soundtrack , among others .

criticism

  • Lexicon of international films : “Not a flat comedy, but a story that is slightly surreal in every respect with subtle gags, a dose of black humor and delicate social criticism. Although it is set in a 60s outfit, the film is timeless and impresses with the age difference of the opponents and the good performance. "
  • Der Spiegel : “The young creative team Owen Wilson (book) and Wes Anderson (director) shows a considerable appetite for chaos, and the main role, through which a guy like Jim Carrey would have struggled wildly grimacing, is performed by newcomer Jason Schwartzman with a poker face that gives the Schwank a mischievous underhandedness. "

The critic Karen Krizanovich writes in her review that this film "brought new life into the tired terrain of the low-budget comedies of the US independent scene". This "wonderfully gruesome" film targets the losers and weird birds of this world. She goes on to judge that actor Bill Murray is having his best hour on screen in this slow, screwball comedy "when he can finally be thoughtful, hurt and weird - all at the same time." The film's soundtrack, which mainly consists of Titles from the 60s made the audience feel as though the film was in a different world than that of the "obviously modern set."
