Moonrise Kingdom is an American comedy film directed by Wes Anderson from the year 2012 .

action

On the (fictional) New Penzance Island off the coast of New England in 1965 : 12-year-old Suzy Bishop lives here with her parents and her three little brothers. She likes to watch with her binoculars and so she discovers that her mother has a relationship with the island police officer Captain Sharp.

Twelve-year-old Sam Shakusky sneaks out of a boy scout camp at night to meet his pen friend Suzy, whom he met last year at a school performance of Benjamin Britten's children's opera “Noah's Deluge” , and to flee with her. However, Suzy is betrayed by her little brother, and the next day the two of Sam's fellow scouts are found. Suzy injures one of them with her left-handed scissors and they manage to escape again.

At a remote bay, the "3.25-mile-inlet", they set up camp and kiss here for the first time. The next morning, however, they are woken up by a search party consisting of Captain Sharp, Sam's fellow Scouts and their leader, Ward, and Suzy's parents. While Suzy is brought back to her parents, Sam, who grew up as an orphan with foster parents who no longer want to take him back, is housed with Captain Sharp until a representative of the youth welfare office decides what to do next: orphanage or electroshock therapy.

When the boy scouts from Sam's troop, in which he was the most unpopular scout, find out about it, they decide to help him and his girlfriend and to enable them to escape again. Together they get to cousin Ben, a relative of one of the children who is stationed in the camp on the neighboring island. He wants to help Suzy and Sam with their further escape and marries them both.

However, their further escape is prevented by an upcoming storm. All residents of the island and also the search party of New Penzance Island find shelter in the church. When Suzy and Sam are discovered there, they both flee to the church tower and are about to jump down into the storm surge when Captain Sharp reaches them and uses the radio to get the representative of the youth welfare office to give her permission to take Sam in. At the same moment the church tower is struck by lightning, but all three survive.

At the end of the film, Suzy and Sam can be seen in the bishop's house. Sam is now also wearing the island police outfit and is painting a picture until he is interrupted by Walt and Laura Bishop, who are now calling their children to table together for the first time. Sam leaves the house through the window and goes to Captain Sharp's car, whom he accompanies on his patrol trip. Sam's picture finally shows the bay where he and Suzy kissed for the first time and which no longer exists after the storm surge. They had given it the name "Moonrise Kingdom".

Film crew and actors at the 2012 Cannes Film Festival

Moonrise Kingdom celebrated its world premiere as the opening film of the 65th Cannes International Film Festival in 2012 . The film was released in German cinemas on May 24, 2012 by Tobis Film .

Trivia

Costumes of the two main characters on display at the Arclight Hollywood

The lighthouse from which Suzy Bishop watches her mother with Captain Sharp was built in Jamestown, Rhode Island for the filming .

Conanicut Island Light, a former lighthouse building on Rhode Island, was used to shoot the exterior of the Bishop's home.

The books Suzy stole from the library are purely fictional. Wes Anderson invented the titles and invented the lines of text that Suzy reads during the film sequences. The covers were designed by six different artists. In April 2012, Anderson decided to additionally animate these text passages and to show them in a promotional video for the movie.

To better prepare them for their roles, Wes Anderson had twelve-year-old actors Hayward and Gilman write letters to each other, just as their characters do in the film.

music

Wes Anderson's various compositions for choir and orchestra by Benjamin Britten were an essential source of inspiration for the film . Britten's The Young Person's Guide to the Orchestra , which Suzy and her siblings listen to at the beginning and end of the film, provides a framework . The opera Noye's Fludde ( Noah's Deluge ) plays a central role at various points in the plot . Other compositions by Britten, which make up parts of the film music, are songs from Friday Afternoons and the opera A Midsummer Night's Dream . The piece Volière ( The Bird House ) from the Carnival of the Animals by Camille Saint-Saëns complements the selection of classical music composed for children. Additional original compositions come from the French composer Alexandre Desplat; For the credits, Desplat composed a version of his theme based on Britten's Young Person's Guide to the Orchestra . You can also hear three songs by country singer Hank Williams . The chanson Le Temps de l'Amour by Françoise Hardy plays a special role .

Reviews

Although Moonrise Kingdom is clearly characterized by the quirky style typical of Wes Anderson, which bothered many critics of his previous films, Moonrise Kingdom was received extremely positively. Hanns-Georg Rodek explains this in his criticism in Die Welt on May 17, 2012 with the bizarre nature that is no longer expressed in the people but in the narrative.

“This is how true love works: unconditionally and seriously. In 'Moonrise Kingdom', the opening film in Cannes, Wes Anderson tells of change - and the future of cinema. "

"Sadness and comedy are always very close together in Moonrise Kingdom, the reality of life and the absurdity of the cinema comedy, embedded in an exuberant wealth of lovingly arranged details that you can hardly get enough of."

- vienna.at

“In summary, Moonrise Kingdom is a highlight for the eye that is difficult to get enough of. Wes Anderson has once again created a complete masterpiece, in which the mixture of script, equipment, music and perfectly cast characters is right like rarely before. Friends of weird humor will surely enjoy it, everyone else should just get involved. "

- MovieMaze.de

“A well-detailed mix of drama, comedy, children's film and love story that scores with precisely matched color compositions. She gathers a bizarre staff to tell of the lightheartedness of childhood, but also of dysfunctional families, with allusions to American cultural history, laconic dialogues and witty observations make the film a pure pleasure. "

Awards

In 2016, Moonrise Kingdom ranked 95th in a BBC poll of the 100 most important films of the 21st century .
