Robert Elmer "Bob" Balaban (born August 16, 1945 in Chicago , Illinois ) is an American actor , film director and film producer .

Life

His father, Elmer Balaban (1909-2001), was the founder of the famous Chicago theater company Balaban and Katz. Elmer's brothers held various positions in the film and theater business. Bob Balaban graduated from Colgate University in Hamilton . He made his debut in 1967 and first played in a few theatrical roles, for The Inspector General he was nominated for a Tony Award in 1979 .

Balaban starred in the film Close Encounters of the Third Kind (1977) alongside Richard Dreyfuss and François Truffaut , in the film Der Höllentrip (1980) alongside William Hurt , in the film The Mexican (2001) alongside Julia Roberts and Brad Pitt . In 2012 he worked as a narrator in the film Moonrise Kingdom by Wes Anderson. He was also seen in a few guest roles on the television series Miami Vice , Seinfeld , Legend and Friends . Among other things, he worked as a producer for the film Gosford Park , for which he also wrote the screenplay . As a director, he worked on several episodes of television series such as Legend and Twilight Zone as well as on the film Pfui Teufel - Daddy is a cannibal ( Parents , 1989) with Randy Quaid .

Balaban has been married to Lynn Grossman since 1977 and has two daughters (* 1977 and * 1987). He lives in New York district of Manhattan .

Bob Balaban is the cousin of director and film producer Burt Balaban .
