Burt Balaban

Burt Balaban (born March 6, 1922 in Chicago , Illinois , † October 14, 1965 ) was an American director and film producer . He became known through films such as Zügellos , Unterwelt or Der Tollwütige .

life and career

Burt Balaban was born in Chicago, Illinois in 1922, the son of Paramount Pictures President Barney Balaban (1887–1971). Balaban made his first film experience as a cameraman for the United States Marine Corps during World War II . He began his film career in 1954 as a television producer and director of the science fiction B-movie Stranger from Venus with Patricia Neal . In the late 1950s, other films followed as a director, such as the drama Lady of Vengeance or the adventure film Zügellos with John Derek in the leading role. In 1960 he directed the cast of Stuart Whitman , May Britt and Henry Morgan in the gangster film Underworld for actor Peter Falk, which received an Oscar nomination for best supporting actor. In 1961 he directed John Davis Chandler in the crime drama The Rabid . Jerry Orbach , Vincent Gardenia and Telly Savalas played in supporting roles . In 1965 he directed the drama The Gentle Rain for the last time. The film with Christopher George did not appear in cinemas until after his death a year later.

Burt Balaban has produced a dozen feature films and television films in his career and has directed several independent productions himself.

Balaban died on October 14, 1965 at the age of 43. Burt Balaban was the cousin of actor Bob Balaban .
