Vincent Gardenia (born January 7, 1920 in Naples , Campania , † December 9, 1992 in Philadelphia , Pennsylvania ) was an American theater, film and television actor. During the 1970s and 1980s, Gardenia starred in well-known films such as A Man Looks Red or Moonstruck as a high- profile supporting actor.

life and work

Vincent Gardenia was born in Italy under the name Vincenzo Scognamiglio . After he emigrated to the United States, he spent much of his life in Brooklyn, New York .

He made his first feature film in 1945. In 1961, he appeared alongside Paul Newman in Haie der Großstadt . He then took on guest roles in countless television series. In the 1970s he was seen in the films A man sees red , Lucky Luchiano and Extrablatt, among others . For a short time he was part of the regular cast of the sitcom All in the Family , the US version of Ein Herz und ein Seele . In 1980 he took on a role in the film Crash Landing in Paradise . 1985 appeared in the musical adaptation of The Little Horror Shop , a year later in the comedy Moonstruck . He had his last major role in 1991 at the side with Joe Pesci in the film A Landlord to Smooch . Vincent Gardenia died of a heart attack in 1992.

In his memory, 16th Avenue in Brooklyn between Cropsey Avenue and Shore Parkway was renamed Vincent Gardenia Boulevard .
