action

The widow Ellen McLean comes with her son Parrish to Connecticut on tobacco - plantation of Sala post. He is also widowed, and Ellen is supposed to be the chaperone for his eldest daughter, Alison . Parrish starts working on the plantation and starts an affair with the farmer girl Lucy. However, the young man is also interested in Alison and begins a romance with her. His mother Ellen marries the tobacco magnate Judd Raike. Parrish moves into Judd Raike's house with his mother and is supposed to work for his stepfather. He leads the tobacco business with his two sons Edgar and Wiley unscrupulously in the fight against his rival Sala Post, which is met with reluctance by Parrish. He quits and goes to the Navy . Alison feels abandoned by Parrish and marries Wiley Raike out of defiance. In the meantime, Lucy is pregnant by Edgar Raike.

Parrish comes back two years later. He leases land from Sala Post. Sala Post has meanwhile given up competition with Judd Raike. However, Parrish struggles to hire field workers for his plantation as the workers fear the repression of Judd Raike. Against all odds, Parrish receives support from Paige Raike, Judd's young daughter. She organizes working groups for field work among her schoolmates for the weekends. The harvest seems to be secured at first. Edgar Raike finally tries to set Parrish's fields on fire, but is caught by Parrish. Parrish beats him up in front of Judd Raike. Judd does not come to his son's aid and realizes that Parrish has won the battle for his tobacco planting and, ultimately, for the heart of Paige Raike.

Reviews

"Shallow entertainment that doesn't get any better even with old star Claudette Colbert and at best produces involuntary comedy."

“Staged with all the clichés of southern melodrama about pride, passion and prejudice. A side work by the director of The Broken Arrow . (Rating: 1 of 4 possible stars - weak) "
