Der Galgenbaum (original title: The Hanging Tree , alternatively also rivals on the Goldriver ) is an American western by director Delmer Daves from 1959 with Gary Cooper , Maria Schell and Karl Malden in the leading roles.

action

Doc Frail came to the small gold mining village of Skull Creek in Montana in 1873 and opened a practice. The locals react with reluctance at first, as he does not reveal anything about his past. He saves the young rune from the gallows, who is now working as an assistant for him.

The gold prospector Frenchy Plante and other men in the village find the seriously injured Elizabeth Mahler, a young Swede who was the only one who survived a stagecoach robbery. They take her to Doc, who will nurse her back to health. In the course of treatment, she falls in love with Doc, who, however, rejects her efforts, although he actually feels the same way about her.

Meanwhile, Frenchy tries an overture on Elizabeth, which leads to a fight between him and Doc. People start talking about Doc and Elizabeth. Dr. George Grubb, who overlooked the incident, sees his alcohol business endangered by the presence of Doc and slowly begins to incite the residents against him.

Despite the talk, Elizabeth stays in the village and purchases a mine with Rune to dig for gold herself. Doc secretly supports her project. When she notices this, she promises to repay everything. At the same time, she learns the real reason for his aloofness, which is due to the infidelity of his deceased wife.

Frenchy eventually becomes a partner in Elizabeth and Rune. When a large gold find is unexpectedly made, there is an exuberant celebration in the village, in which the alcohol flows freely. Frenchy is mad and tries to rape Elizabeth. Doc intervenes and shoots him. This incident gives Grubb the opportunity to turn the villagers against him for good and bring him to the gallows. He is saved at the last minute by Elizabeth, who proves her love for him by ceding her rights to the mine to the villagers. Doc then finally decides for her.

Reviews

"The penultimate western Gary Coopers turned out to be a bit simple in its psychological plot, but good actors, an excellent staging and the convincing camera work make up for it."

Production and synchronization

The script was based on the novel The Hanging Tree by Dorothy M. Johnson .

Filming took place in the Oak Creek Wildlife Area in the mountains west of  Yakima, Washington . The opening scene in which Gary Cooper rides along the river was filmed in mid-June 1958 northeast of Goose Prairie, Washington on the north bank of the Bumping River . The gold mining town's movie set was built at the southern end of Little Rattlesnake Creek, southwest of Nile, Washington .

Leading actor Gary Cooper , who also worked as a co-producer with his Baroda Productions, worked with director Delmer Daves for the second time after the storm over the Pacific . Karl Malden stepped in for the director when he was canceled due to illness after two thirds of the shooting time, which was not mentioned in the opening and closing credits.

The Warner Bros. gave the film in 1959 in the West German cinemas. In this synchronized version, which is still in use today, Gary Cooper got the voice of Heinz Engelmann . Maria Schell dubbed herself, and Karl Malden was voiced by Wolf Martini .
