Madeleine Sherwood

Madeleine Sherwood (* 13. November 1922 in Montreal , Quebec as Louise Helene Thornton ; † 23. April 2016 in Lac Cornu , Quebec) was a Canadian actress .

life and career

Madeleine Sherwood has been on stage since she was a child. After living as a professional actress in Canada for several years, she moved to New York City in 1950 . Here she played the role of the deceitful Abigail Williams in the world premiere of Arthur Miller's drama Witch Hunt on Broadway in 1953 . Then Tennessee Williams cast the red-haired actress as sister-in-law Mae in his play The Cat on a Hot Tin Roof . Sherwood embodied the role of Mae in the film adaptation of the same name with Elizabeth Taylor and Paul Newman from 1958. In Hollywood, The Cat on a Hot Tin Roof was Sherwood's greatest success, which was otherwise mostly subscribed to smaller roles in films. At the theater, however, she continued to enjoy success. She also appeared regularly in television productions such as Bonanza , Hotel and Cagney & Lacey . A wide audience in America, she became known through her role as Mother Superior in the television series The Flying Nun (1967-1970).

At the end of the 1980s she retired into private life, but stood in front of the camera again in 2010 for a short film. In the McCarthy era , Sherwood was suspected of communism and even ended up on one of the notorious black lists for a time. She was heavily involved in the African American civil rights movement in the 1960s. The actress was married to Robert Sherwood and has a daughter, two grandchildren and several great-grandchildren.
