Skin Deep - It's not easy for men either is an erotic American comedy film by Blake Edwards from 1989 with John Ritter in the lead role.

action

The Californian writer Zach Hutton is in the middle of a mid- life crisis . His last book success was a long time ago and he has been struggling with writer's block for some time. In addition, Hutton is quite a hallodri and philanderer who starts an intimate relationship with almost every woman he meets. When he is surprised by another love affair during such a tête-à-tête and threatened with armed violence, Zach's wife Alex joins them, who knows her husband's libido. Alex then puts Zach in front of the door and finally separates from him.

After the divorce, Zach becomes a wreck. His only fixed points now are his best friend Jake , his friend Barney (bartender) and his psychiatrist Dr. Westford . They try to straighten the bent person again, but this always fails because of Zach's awkward behavior, which also brings him into embarrassing situations several times.

Hutton's only purpose in life seems to be to win back his ex-wife, which is almost always prevented by Alex's mother Marge , who is enemies with Zach. On the other hand, Zach can't leave women alone. But whether rocker wife Amy , the choleric pyromaniac Molly or bodybuilder Lonnie - Zach either stumbles over his own clumsiness, the matriarchal dominance of his female counterpart, or he fails because he cannot forget Alex.

Zach wants to confront his wife and after a lot of quarrels he tracks her down in a remote hotel where she is about to marry her new boyfriend. Zach's entire circle of friends is also present, only he has been (intentionally) forgotten. But when Zach's appearance, the wedding breaks up and he retreats to a beach house on the Pacific , where he finally realizes the reason for all his problems. He finally starts to write about it again and finally brings out a new bestseller.

As a result, Zach is finally settled and loyal; He and Alex get closer and find each other again.

Reviews

film-dienst : Fast-paced and rapidly assembled, frivolous gender comedy with a good leading actor, perfect timing and some surprising gags.

useful information

  • Nina Foch, who embodies Zach's mother-in-law Marge, was John Ritter's acting teacher in real life.
  • The most famous scene in the film is the so-called dance of the luminous condoms , in which the actors John Ritter and Bryan Genesse act against a black background (dark bedroom) , who can only be recognized by phosphorescent condoms on their erections.
