content
The almost 50-year-old cowboy Ross Bodine works for the bossy rancher Walter Buckman. When a friend of his is killed in an accident, he realizes that he doesn't have much time left to fulfill his dream of running his own ranch. He finally lets his young companion Frank persuade him to rob the bank in the nearby town. With a loot of $ 30,000, they flee towards Mexico. Buckman sees the coup as a personal affront to himself and wants his two sons to join the sheriff in the hunt for Ross and Frank. Paul, Buckman's favorite son, soon gets tired of the hunt. John, who wants his father's approval, does not give up even when his father is shot in a shootout with sheep farmers. Ross and Frank could soon feel safe; but they make a grave mistake when they venture into a small town after a long ride. While playing poker, Frank clashes with other players and is seriously injured in the shootout that follows. Ross, who tries very hard for him, cannot help him. Soon his fate will overtake him ...
criticism
Blake Edwards' only western captivates with its realistic portrayal of life at that time. The film is a melancholy swan song to western myths about an easy, carefree existence. Rather, the focus is on the hard work on the ranch, which the two cowboys are trying to escape with their escape; but their dream of freedom and modest prosperity does not come true.
"Careful in the milieu drawing, with rich dialogue, but too broad and not free from melodrama and kitsch."
