Sunset is an American film in the comedy genre with western and thriller elements. The film, directed by Blake Edwards and starring Bruce Willis and James Garner, describes a fictional episode in the life of the then western and silent film star Tom Mix , who, together with the legendary Wyatt Earp, solves a crime in the film industry.

action

The famous western star Tom Mix is said to portray the legendary Marshal Wyatt Earp for the film producer Alfie Alperin, who used to be a well-known slapstick comedian . For this purpose, Earp is hired as a consultant specifically for the film. Mix and Earp get along straight away and so the first recordings of the famous shooting at OK Corral are shot.

Earp is asked by Christina (Alperin's wife and former friend of Earp) to help her son Michael, a notorious drinker, who allegedly beat up an animator in a nightclub. The marshal and Mix visit the club and meet Alperin's sister Victoria, who visits the establishment together with Dutch Kieffer, a well-known underworld great. They meet the murdered owner Candice Gérard in the guest house and find the drunk Michael next to her. Earp and Mix escape with the boy before the police arrive and put him up with Mix's friend Nancy. When Wyatt returns to his house that evening, the desperate Cheryl, the club's bartender and alleged lover of Candice Gérard, awaits him there.

The next day, Earp and Mix are questioned in the office of Marvin Dibner, the security chief of the studio, by the corrupt head of the local homicide squad (Captain Blackworth), who saw the two fleeing the scene the night before. But he can't get anything out of the two. During a break in filming, they learn from Nancy that Michael has fled. At lunch with Alperin, this Earp urges him to leave his wife alone and not stick his fingers in matters that are none of his business. The marshal realizes that behind the mask of the funny comedian hides a cold sadist who does not stop at his own wife. Mix also tells Earp that Alperin's tyrannical business conduct is well known in the industry.

Michael has been arrested in the meantime, so that Nancy is now also in danger because she hid Michael. Mix brings his girlfriend out of town. From Cheryl, Earp learns that she is actually the daughter of Candice and that her mother kept a book with compromising details about some of her city-famous guests, and that Blackworth and Dutch Kieffer are after her together. Before Earp can catch the gangster, he is knocked down and tied up in his club, which is also where Captain Blackworth is, but Cheryl and Mix can later free him.

Alperin wants to get rid of Mix and Earp, but Dutch Kieffer wants the book first. Christina, who overheard parts of the conversation between the two, warns Tom by phone: Kieffer knows that Nancy is hiding on a ranch and that he wants to get the book through her. Mix and Earp set off on a plane and arrive just in time to meet Kieffer's henchman; they die in a subsequent shooting. Meanwhile, Christina is caught by her husband.

Mix is arrested at Candice Gérard's funeral for allegedly raping Alperin's sister. In prison he meets Michael, who tells him that someone put something in his drink and then placed it in Candice Gérard's guest house. In addition, Christina Alperin is seriously injured in hospital. Cheryl receives an envelope with a locker key from a lawyer and finds money in the box and a letter from her mother, in which she says that Alperin murdered his first wife and that Candice had promised the club in case she was silent.

In the hospital, Mix and Earp learn from Christina shortly before their death that Alfie Alperin is not Michael's biological father and that after learning that he was unable to conceive, he began to hate Michael. Mix and Earp now know that Alfie murdered Candice. On the first Oscar -Verleihung in which Alperin again in the mask of his famous character, the Happy Hobo (one clearly visible to the Chaplin - Tramp ajar figure) occurs, it leads to eventual showdown : Alfie is provided by Earp, Victoria comes in between. She claims she murdered Candice. Captain Blackworth and Chief Dibner arrive to arrest Earp for killing the men on the ranch. Victoria wants to prevent this because Earp could testify about her brother. A scuffle ensues. Victoria shoots Dibner, Blackworth shoots Victoria, Kieffer who has joined them shoots Blackworth. Mix follows Alperin, who wants to take his car to the marina to flee with his yacht. Arthur (Alperin's chauffeur and ex-convict on probation), who has had enough of the harassment of his boss, intentionally steers the car into the sea and is able to escape. And when Alperin tries to shoot Mix, he is struck down by Earp, who arrives in time.

background

  • In addition to the crime story, the film provides a small portrait of the dream factory at the time of the changeover from silent film to sound film and is set in the context of the first Academy Awards in 1929. In addition, the legend of Wyatt Earp , who was glorified as a hero during his lifetime ironically thematized. Whenever Wyatt Earp is asked whether something specific has really happened in his life, he replies in Sunset: “Of course! - Well, more or less. "
  • James Garner has portrayed this marshal before, in The Five Outlaws (1967) by John Sturges . There, however, Earp was portrayed as an unsympathetic and ambivalent figure. The real Wyatt Earp died on January 13, 1929 at the age of 80.
  • Originally Robert Duvall was supposed to take on the role of Tom Mix.
  • Bruce Willis was just beginning his career with this role. He was not dubbed by his later regular speaker Manfred Lehmann , but by Manfred Seipold .

Reviews

“Director Blake Edwards lightly mixed his homage to Hollywood's golden years into an entertaining cocktail of pastiche, nostalgia and crime. One person in particular cut a fine figure: James Garner. The charmer, who in his eventful career also posed as a model for swimming trunks, easily plays Bruce Willis on the wall. "

"A glamorous look back, but also an exciting and action-packed real crime thriller, at the same time a virtuoso game with the medium of film and cinematic reality."
