M. Emmet Walsh (born March 22, 1935 in Ogdensburg , New York ; actually Michael Emmet Walsh ) is an American actor .

life and career

Walsh, who is of Irish descent, was born to Agnes Katherine and Harry Maurice Walsh, a customs officer. He grew up in Vermont and studied at Clarkson University in Potsdam , New York . After graduating there, he began his career as an actor and has appeared in a total of over 200 film and television productions to date , mostly as a supporting actor.

His first movie was the Oscar-winning Asphalt Cowboy , in which Walsh only had an extra role as a bus passenger. Even in the 1970s, most of his roles remained small until he was able to attract attention for the first time in 1978 with the crime drama Hour of Probation with Dustin Hoffman . He then played in Blade Runner (1982) with Harrison Ford as Captain Harry Bryant and in Crazy Christmas (2004) as a neighbor of Tim Allen . For his portrayal in the thriller Blood Simple - A Murderous Night , he won an Independent Spirit Award in 1986 for best male leading actor.

Influential film critic Roger Ebert formulated the Stanton-Walsh Rule , which states that no film starring Walsh or Harry Dean Stanton can be completely bad.
