occupation

This Land is My Land is an American drama directed by Hal Ashby from 1976 and depicts the life of the American folk singer Woody Guthrie (1912–1967).

action

Woody lived in Texas with his wife Mary in the 1930s. As a stubborn casual worker, he lives with his wife in modest circumstances. As a tramp he tries to get to California. After a few difficulties he manages, but here too he only sees unemployment, hardship and hopelessness.

The singer Ozark visits the plantation workers with his guitar and tries to get them to join a union. He notices Woody and invites him to audition at a radio station. In fact, Woody made the leap and even got his own show in which he carried the union spirit forward. As a result, he meets with a lot of resistance.

criticism

“If you don't measure this film by its degree of loyalty to history, then you will still come across some unnecessary adornment and artistic will, but still have to acknowledge that Ashby made a film that is very rich and rounded in terms of characters and motifs which, even in its political fuzziness, still shows a logical and necessary politicization in a credible manner, does not withhold the price for it (private as well as economic) and at least spares Woody Guthrie's songs in the re-staging from any slipperiness.
