Harold Leventhal

Harold Leventhal (born May 2, 1919 in Ellenville , New York , † October 4, 2005 in New York City ) was an American music producer and manager who was also involved in the production of some films.

Life

Born in Ellenville, Leventhal grew up on the Lower East Side and in the Bronx in New York City . In the 1930s he worked as a so-called song plugger for the musician Irving Berlin . During World War II he served in the United States Army Signal Corps and was stationed in India . After the war he returned to New York and began working as a manager for The Weavers . Leventhal remained connected to folk music throughout his life. He worked with Pete Seeger and Woody Guthrie . After Guthrie's death, he established the Woody Guthrie Foundation and Archives. Other artists he worked with included a. Joan Baez , Johnny Cash and Judy Collins .

On April 12, 1963, he presented Bob Dylan at his first concert in the Town Hall .

In 1969 he was involved in the production of the film Alice's Restaurant . The film This Land ist mein Land followed in 1969 , for which he and Robert F. Blumofe were nominated for an Oscar in the category of best film in 1977 . In the 1980s he was still involved in the production of some documentaries. His films were also connected to the theme of music.

He received a Grammy for the album A Tribute to Woody Guthrie and Lead Belly, which he produced in 1989 .

Leventhal was survived by his wife and two daughters.
