Equinox (alternative title: Equinox - Between Day and Night ) is an American thriller from 1992 . Directed by Alan Rudolph , who also wrote the script.

action

Henry Petosa, who lives in the fictional city of Empire, works in a car repair shop owned by his adoptive father Pete. Henry is in love with Beverly, the sister of his friend Russell Franks, but he is too shy to confess his love to her. After spending a spontaneous night together, Henry tries to call Beverly, but he always hangs up as soon as he hears her voice. Beverly, on the other hand, hopes for nothing more than that Henry clearly expresses himself to her and calls. While both "wait for each other", they both have to fend off their intrusive neighbors. When trying to protect his neighbor Rosie from her jealous friend and pimp, he even has to fight with this, which he actually reluctantly. Especially since he has an appointment with Beverly that evening, which her brother has arranged for both of them. They meet in a bar and observe that the bar owner is obviously harassed by protection rackets. Without attaching any further importance, Henry enjoys the evening and makes an appointment with Beverly for the next day. He tells her that his adoptive father wants to sell the garage and that he should get half the money to make his dreams come true. For this he wants Beverly to come with him and they travel the world.

Little does Henry know that he has a twin brother who, unlike him, lives from violence against others. His name is Freddy Ace and he works for the influential gangster Paris. Meanwhile, Freddy is no longer just his driver, but also has to kill someone, which is a bit too far for him. He finds Paris increasingly repugnant and wonders how he can ever get off here.

Henry is unexpectedly across from his brother when one day he meets up with Russell again in the restaurant from the other day and Freddy shows up in the course of his business. In a shootout, however, Freddy is killed without Henry being able to speak a word to him. Horrified and confused, Henry runs out of the bar, fetches a car from the workshop and wants to flee the city with Beverly that night. But it goes too fast for Beverly and she refuses to come along. The next day, Beverly receives a visit from the aspiring writer and hobby detective Sonya Kirk. She is a full-time nurse and had found a sealed letter on a deceased patient that made her aware of the story of the two twins, who grew up separately. Their research had shown that the brothers were separated shortly after birth and are the sons of a European nobleman. He had set up an escrow account for his children, which over the years has grown to over 4 million. She also knows the code word from the letter; Equinox that she wanted to convey to Henry.

On his flight from the gangsters, by whom Henry feels persecuted, he suddenly pauses and gazes at the vast country from a rock. Whether he goes back to Beverly remains open.

Reviews

James Berardinelli scoffed at ReelViews that he didn't know whether the film was a satire of those films in which people would learn their true identity - or a bad example of the genre. All characters are irritating. The portrayal of Matthew Modine is exaggerated, with he plays the role of Freddy Ace better than that of Henry Petosa . The lines of dialogue between both brothers would look like they were borrowed from B detective films. Lara Flynn Boyle acts just as badly as Modine and seems to compete with him for the worst representation.

Stephen Holden wrote in the New York Times on September 8, 1993 that Alan Rudolph's "atmospheric" and "stylized" films showed lonely people in a big city. This also applies to this film, the plot of which is set in the fictional city of Empire , which is a "surreal version" of New York City. The characters are shown like the "Hollywood icons" of the old days. Matthew Modine does a good job of differentiating both twin brothers without overdrawing the characters. In addition, Marisa Tomei stands out in her small, but “substantial” role.

The editors of Rotten Tomatoes wrote that the "quirky", entertaining and moving film thematized questions of identity and duality. He has "colorful" cast. The camera work is "excellent", the film music is "haunting".

Awards

Alan Rudolph was nominated for the 1992 Deauville Film Festival Critics' Prize. Matthew Modine, Lara Flynn Boyle, producer David Blocker and cinematographer Elliot Davis were nominated for the 1994 Independent Spirit Award .
