Elliot Davis

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Elliot Davis (born May 23, 1948 ) is an American cameraman , one of the busiest image designers in Hollywood .

Life

Davis studied architecture at the Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University in Blacksburg and then obtained his Masters of Fine Arts from UCLA ( Los Angeles ). Eventually he began working as a photographer and cameraman, initially with documentaries such as Philippe Cousteau's 30-minute nature TV film Oasis in Space and independent productions. Since the late 1970s, he was also brought in as a simple cameraman for higher-class feature films.

In the second half of the 1980s, Davis was able to establish himself firmly in Hollywood. In the years that followed, he initially photographed predominantly conventional A-productions, which were not always top-quality or cast, but also more ambitious films such as Miles from Home with Richard Gere . He was also involved in several of Steven Soderbergh 's side works. Only since the late 1990s was Davis brought in for top productions (not always successful at the box office) with stars such as Bill Murray , George Clooney , Jennifer Lopez , Madonna , Sandra Bullock , Michelle Pfeiffer , Sean Penn and Bruce Willis .

Davis' style is highly inconsistent, he sees himself "as an artist who expresses himself through camera work". His creative spectrum ranges from hand-held camera photography that insinuates realism effects (as in Thirteen and Ich bin Sam , for example ), which, due to its sometimes shaky images, has not always met with approval everywhere, to sleek, high-gloss, high-quality clothing in the style of pleasing, conventional mainstream entertainment (As in the second part of the Naturally Blonde films and the first Twilight adaptation). In addition to Thirteen , Dogtown Boys , Out of Sight , Lovesong for Bobby Long and Auf diestürmische Art received high praise for his work.
