Romeo + Juliet is a film drama by Baz Luhrmann from the year 1996 , based on the play Romeo and Juliet by William Shakespeare (1596). The main roles are played by Leonardo DiCaprio and Claire Danes . The film opened in German cinemas on March 13, 1997.
action
Romeo and Juliet, pupils of the warring families Montague and Capulet, fall in love at a masquerade ball without even knowing the other's name. Aware of their forbidden love, they want to settle the eternal dispute between the two respected families with their secret marriage. They find support from Julia's wet nurse and Father Laurence, who marries them.
But Romeo's friend Mercutio is murdered by Juliet's cousin Tybalt in a dispute, whereupon Romeo shoots Tybalt. After their wedding night, Romeo flees into exile. Julia's parents have now arranged their daughter's wedding with the heartthrob Count Paris. She receives a sleeping potion from Laurence, which puts her in a death-like state, whereby she escapes the forced marriage to Count Paris.
Romeo's servant Balthasar witnesses Juliet's "funeral", but Father Laurence can no longer explain it. Balthasar goes to Mantua and tells Romeo what he had seen. Romeo is desperate because of this news and makes his way to Verona - back to his Juliet. In deep sadness and despair, he procures a deadly poison and says goodbye to Julia in the crypt of the Capulets. Juliet wakes up the moment Romeo drinks the poison. When she has to watch her lover die, she shoots herself with Romeo's pistol.
criticism
“From set pieces of the current action cinema, pop music culture, a good dose of religious kitsch and the 400 year old original text, a brilliant version of Shakespeare's love tragedy for the MTV generation was created that challenged the audience's perceptual abilities due to the overflowing abundance of ideas. Despite a few weaknesses, the film is an exciting attempt to place Shakespeare in a current context of reflection on violence and modern media culture. "
background
- The film is the second part of Baz Luhrmann's Red Curtain Trilogy .
- Ewan McGregor , Christian Bale , Natalie Portman , Kate Winslet and Reese Witherspoon auditioned for the leading roles .
- William Shakespeare's Romeo + Juliet was filmed in Mexico from January to April 1996 . The murder of Mercutio was filmed during a hurricane .
- The element water has a special meaning in this film. It symbolizes the purity of love between Romeo and Juliet. Both can be seen in different underwater scenes, they see each other for the first time through an aquarium and kiss in the pool. Tybalt's death in a well destroys the purity of this love.
Special offers
Among other things, the film became known because of the very specially modified vehicles and weapons. The modified automatic pistols are based on the model of the Beretta 92 FS and its licensed version Taurus PT92 or PT96 as well as the Colt Combat Commander, a variant of the Colt 1911 . The engraved names were then adapted to the original of Shakespeare's version. The firearms are called dagger ( dagger ), sword ( sword ) or rapier , each supplemented with the corresponding caliber specification.
As in Shakespeare's drama, the dialogues are spoken in verse.
