from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Donald 'Don' M. McAlpine (born April 13, 1934 in Quandialla near Temora , New South Wales , Australia ) is an Australian cameraman .

Life

McAlpine began his behind-the-camera career in 1962 as an assistant at the Australian Broadcasting Corporation . Four years later he moved to the Commonwealth Film Unit . As a photo reporter, McAlpine was subsequently sent to Vietnam to report on the war there.

In 1968 McAlpine began working as a chief cameraman, initially for documentaries. In 1969 he also photographed short films with games on his own initiative for the first time. His first big box office success was the film The Adventures of Barry McKenzie , made in London in 1972, directed by his compatriot Bruce Beresford . Don McAlpine was also involved in its sequel, Barry McKenzie Holds His Own, two years later.

McAlpine's career took off significantly with the beginning of the heyday of Australian cinema in the mid-1970s. He has photographed a considerable number of internationally acclaimed and acclaimed Australian films, including Gillian Armstrong's emancipation story, My Brilliant Career, and Beresford's reconstruction of a faked court martial, The Case of Lieutnant Morant . They were films "in which McAlpine carefully touched faces and landscapes and arranged them as a harmonizing and at the same time excitingly vibrating interplay".

In 1982 he went to Hollywood and in no time at all was given the opportunity to photograph top productions under leading directors such as Paul Mazursky , Alan J. Pakula and Martin Ritt . Don McAlpine has since overseen many film genres as Director of Photography , including Bible adaptations , action films , comedies, and fantasy films . His intimate portraits of people ( basement children , Stanley and Iris ) and burlesque comedies ( Zoff in Beverly Hills , Moon over Parador , Mrs. Doubtfire - The prickly nanny ) can be rated as particularly successful . His greatest success to date was in 2002 when he received an Oscar nomination for his work on Baz Luhrmann's musical adaptation of Moulin Rouge (2001), but was left behind against Andrew Lesnie ( The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring ).
