King David , a Bible film from 1984/1985, tells the story of the first two kings of Israel , David and Saul .
action
Saul , an unsocial and godless person, forfeits his royal dignity, and so the prophet Samuel elects the shepherd David as king of the land. When he kills the Philistine Goliath with the help of a simple slingshot, King Saul begins to hate him. David has to flee. When Saul camps in a cave in search of David, he sneaks up in the night and steals the sword from the sleeping man. With this act David shows that it is not he who is looking for the conflict, but that he respects Saul. David goes to a Philistine city for his protection. However, he will not fight against Israel together with the Philistines. King Saul and his son die in a battle against the Philistines. David is finally crowned king in Jerusalem . It is the beginning of a reign in which the young king, like his predecessor, makes mistakes. King David sends one of his soldiers to the front line, where he perishes so that David can take his wife Bathsheba . The prophet Nathan reproaches him for this in a parable and prophesies the death of the first child of David and Bathsheba. The first child dies, the second child is Solomon . (This Solomon will succeed David and build the temple that David planned.) David's eldest son (from another relationship) Absalom kills his brother because he has dishonored her half-sister (probably raped). King David mitigates the sentence from death to exile, but still loves Absalom in his heart. The exile, however, gathered supporters to overthrow David. The revolt is put down and Absalom is killed. A morally battered King David stays on the right path from now on.
background
The script of the film, which was shot in Italy, adheres exactly to the Bible in many places - some psalms are also quoted - but many parts are merged and events are reversed in time.
The German Film and Media Evaluation FBW in Wiesbaden awarded the film the title valuable.
Richard Gere was nominated for the 1986 Golden Raspberry for his acting performance .
