Edward Albert Arthur Woodward , OBE (born June 1, 1930 in the London Borough of Croydon , Greater London , † November 16, 2009 in Truro , Cornwall ) was a British actor and singer.

biography

Woodward attended in Croydon, a borough in south London , the schools Eccleston Road and Sydenham Road School , also the Elmwood School in Wallingford, then the Kingston College and at fifteen the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art , of which he later became a member.

In 1952 he married Venetia Mary Collett (Venetia Barrett). They have three children, Sarah, Tim and Peter , who are all actors. The marriage ended in divorce in the 1980s. In 1987 Woodward married actress Michele Dotrice, with whom he has a daughter. Michele Dotrice comes from a family of actors. One of her sisters is the actress Karen Dotrice .

Woodward began his career in 1946 on the stage at the Castle Theater in Farnham. He then continued his work in various places in England and Scotland, such as 1955 in the comedy Where's There A Will , which was also filmed with him in the same year. In 1955 he played for the first time in London, where he appeared again and again over the next four decades. In the theater he was seen in Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet and in Hamlet in 1958 and in Cyrano de Bergerac by Edmond Rostand in 1971 . At times Woodward also worked on Broadway , for example in Rattle of a Simple Man (1963) and in the musical comedy High Spirits (1964-1965), which won three Tony Awards and was an adaptation of the play Geisterkomödie (Blithe Spirit) by Noël Coward . The comedy The Best Laid Plans followed in 1966 .

In addition to theatrical stages, Woodward has appeared in numerous films and television productions. He impersonated the leading roles in the British television series Callan (1967-1972) and the US television series The Equalizer (1985-1989). Woodward also tried his hand at singing. He recorded at least twelve music albums on LPs , as well as three readings with poems and spoke fourteen audio books on cassette. It has twice received the Gold Discs music award , the British equivalent of the Grammy .

In the 1973 British horror film The Wicker Man , Woodward starred alongside Christopher Lee . In the Australian film drama The Fall of Lieutenant Morant (Breaker Morant) (1980) he portrayed the title character. In the dramatic secret agent series Nikita , he was seen in the last four episodes as the main character ( Peta Wilson ) wanted Mister Jones .

Awards

He was named Television Actor of the Year in 1969 and 1970 . In 1970 and the following two years, he received Sun Awards for best actor . In 1970, Woodward won a BAFTA TV Award for Best Actor for Leading Role in the television series Callan . In 1978 he was appointed Officer of the British Empire (OBE). In 1987 he received a Golden Globe Award for best actor in a dramatic television series for his leading role in The Equalizer . At the Emmy Awards , he was nominated five times for The Equalizer from 1986 to 1990 and once for a role as a guest star in the drama series Alfred Hitchcock Presents .
