Karen Dotrice (born November 9, 1955 in Guernsey , Channel Islands ) is a British actress , best known for her child role as Jane Banks in the Walt Disney film adaptation of Mary Poppins .

Her career began on the stage, leading to film and television roles, and ended in a small role as Desdemona in a Broadway production of Othello . Karen Dotrice retired from show business in 1984 to focus more on her role as the mother of their three children from two marriages.

Life

Karen Dotrice is the daughter of Roy and Kay Dotrice , two Shakespeare actors who met during a theater production. Karen Dotrice's sisters Michele and Yvette are also actresses. Her godfather was the actor Charles Laughton . Because she was born in the Channel Islands but spent her childhood in England , she calls herself English rather than British.

Karen Dotrice was a toddler when her father started at the Shakespeare Memorial Theater (later The Royal Shakespeare Company ) in 1957 . At the age of four she made her debut in the Royal Shakespeare Company production of Bertolt Brecht's The Caucasian Chalk Circle . A Disney scout saw her and took her to Burbank , where she met Walt Disney .

In the series Das Haus am Eaton Place , she played the housemaid Lily in season 5. However, she is not seen in every episode and leaves the series around the middle of the season.

In 2004 she was honored with the Disney Legends Award, which her late partner in the Mary Poppins film, Matthew Garber , also received posthumously.
