action

New York City-based divorced Luke Harrison, father of two, begins a relationship with successful photographer Isabel Kelly. She wants to marry Luke and fights for the affection of his children Ben and Anna. The mother of the two, Jackie, sees Isabel as a competitor and leaves no stone unturned to discredit her in the eyes of the children . After Isabel lets Ben out of her eyes in downtown New York and the police find him, Jackie is considering getting a court order that would prohibit Isabel from being around the children. Luke has trouble getting his ex-wife out of this idea.

Jackie learns that she has cancer and comes to the conclusion that she absolutely needs Isabel as the future educator of her children. One day Isabel sees a ticket to Los Angeles that has been issued to Jackie and suspects that Jackie wants to move there. She fears Jackie might take the children away from her husband and is shocked. Jackie reveals that she is sick and is flying to Los Angeles for treatment. In the German dubbed version of the film, the two women start to speak on duet at that moment.

The treatment does not bring any results. Jackie's doctor suggests other therapies in Paris or Switzerland, but Jackie wants to stay close to the family.

Isabel tries to live up to the role of the stepmother, for which she even neglects her work. When Anna is abandoned and humiliated by her boyfriend, Isabel hires a male model to play Anna's new boyfriend in order to make her ex-boyfriend jealous. Although Anna's reputation in school is rising, Jackie is dissatisfied with Isabel's upbringing methods. A dispute ensues as to which of the women is better suited as a role model for Anna.

Jackie meets with Isabel in a restaurant and reveals that she often neglected her duties as a mother. She once lost her son in a supermarket and only found him again after a long search. She says the children don't have to choose between the two women. In the end, Isabel is accepted by Jackie as a family member.
