action

At the beginning of the film, the 8 main actors stand on a stage and sing the opening song. The story begins on December 24, 1989 at 9:00 p.m. The filmmaker Mark Cohen decides to film without script in order to finally make an important documentary. He lives with the formerly successful musician Roger Davis in an apartment on Avenue A , the houses of which are soon to be demolished. Neither of them can pay the last annual rent and the electricity. An old friend of Roger and Mark, Collins, a philosophy professor, comes by but is robbed and beaten up in a back alley. Out of frustration and anger about the house owners and the turned off electricity, Mark and Roger burn all the paper they have in the house, the residents of the entire street revolt and they throw their burning reminders on the street.

The homeowner's son-in-law, Benny, who years ago lived in this house with Mark, Roger, Collins, and Mark's ex-girlfriend Maureen, tries to persuade Mark and Roger to support him. Maureen, who left Mark for a lawyer named Joanne, is planning a demonstration against Benny's plans to rebuild the neighborhood. Mark and Roger are supposed to prevent them from doing so and could live in their apartment for free.

The young street artist and transvestite Angel finds Collins and takes him to "Life Support", where people with AIDS meet. Collins previously told him that he too had AIDS. Mark goes in search of Collins. Roger remembers when he was still successful and how he met his girlfriend April, who later dragged him into the drug swamp and unknowingly infected him with HIV. He is disturbed by his young neighbor, Mimi, who asks him to open her light for her candle as the electricity is still switched off. But she keeps blowing it out secretly so as not to have to leave. Roger, a former drug addict, tries to take a sachet of drugs away from her and talk her out of using it. But Mimi beguiled him to get it back, took it and left the apartment.

The next day, Collins shows up and tells Mark and Roger how he met Angel. He has just earned a lot of money and tells how he drove an annoying dog into the afterlife by drumming. Meanwhile, Mark is called by Maureen, who has problems with her technique. Collins and Angel want Roger to join "Life Support", but he refuses at first. However, Mark says that after judging Maureen's technique, he will comply. When Mark arrives there, Maureen is not there, but her partner Joanne. The two exchange ideas about Maureen's unreliability.

Mark shows up at the beginning of the Life Support round. The group talks about their fears. In the evening Mimi appears as a dancer in a club. She visits Roger for the second time, but is very unfriendly sent away by him due to her drug addiction and apparent fickleness. The next day, Mark, Collins and Angel meet again at Life Support, where Roger also appears. Then Mark, Roger, Collins and Angel ride the subway and Collins suggests going to Santa Fe and opening a restaurant there.

Angel and Collins go on alone, deepening their relationship and professing their love for each other. In the evening, Maureen's demonstration event takes place and everyone meets there. She is disturbed by the police. However, Mark records this and sells the recordings to television. After the unsuccessful protest, the friends praise life in the bohemian in a restaurant. Mimi admits to Roger that she also has AIDS, and the two get together.

At New Year's, Mark, Roger, Collins, Mimi, Maureen and Joanne go to Mark and Roger, where they first have to break down the front door and find out that Benny has had the apartments cleared. Mark takes a job at a television station. Maureen proposes to Joanne, but the engagement is broken off at the engagement party because Maureen cannot cope with Joanne's jealousy and Joanne cannot cope with Maureen's flirting with strangers. When Mark, Roger, Mimi, Collins and Angel go to Mark and Roger, they meet Benny, who has brought the furniture back at Mimi's request.

Among other things, because of Mimi's drug addiction, Roger separates from Mimi and she gets back together with Benny. Angel loses the fight against the HIV virus and dies. At the funeral there is an argument between Mimi and Roger and between Maureen and Joanne, but Joanne and Maureen make up again. Roger goes to Sante Fe (New Mexico) to finally write a song. After a while, Mark quits his job to make a movie about his friends. Roger can't get away from Mimi and comes back. Mimi has been missing for three months. On December 24, 1990, everyone meets in Mark and Roger's apartment when Maureen and Joanne find Mimi sick and half-dead. Roger sings his song for her and confesses his love for her, but it seems as if she is dying. But with the words that Angel sent her back, she comes back to life and Mark presents his film, which he dedicated to Angel.
