Stephen Chbosky (born January 25, 1970 in Pittsburgh ) is an American novelist , screenwriter and director . Chbosky is best known for the New York Times bestseller Maybe Better Tomorrow (The Perks of Being a Wallflower) from 1999, which is about growing up. He wrote and directed the film adaptation with Logan Lerman , Emma Watson and Ezra Miller .

Life

Chbosky was born in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania and grew up in Upper St. Clair - a suburb of Pittsburgh. He is the son of Lea (nee Meyer), a tax clerk, and Fred G. Chbosky, manager and consultant for CFOs in a steel company. Chbosky has a sister, Stacy. He was raised Catholic.

With the comedy film The Four Corners of Nowhere produced in 1995 , Chbosky made his debut as a screenwriter and director. It was not until 2000 that he reappeared in this regard and took part in some episodes of the series Brutally Normal . After working on the script on Rent , Chbosky developed the television series Jericho - The Stop , which was produced from 2006 to 2008.

However, Chbosky became internationally known for his novel Maybe Better Tomorrow . Although the story was explicitly aimed at young people and was published by Pocket Books at its subsidiary MTV Books as literature for young adults , the book nonetheless developed into a bestseller for all ages. In 2012 Chbosky adapted and directed the film version himself with Logan Lerman, Emma Watson and Ezra Miller. The film was nominated for numerous awards and it won a Chlotrudis Award in the category Best Adapted Screenplay and an Independent Spirit Award . On October 1, 2019, 20 years after his literary debut, Chbosky's second novel, the horror story Imaginary Friend, was published .

Chbosky was involved in the script for Beauty and the Beast (2017). In addition, the literary film adaptation he directed was released in the same year .

In 2018 he was appointed to the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences , which awards the Oscars , among other things .
