Maybe Better Tomorrow (Original Title: The Perks of Being a Wallflower ) is a 2012 American drama based on the novel by Stephen Chbosky . The film was directed by Chbosky himself, with Logan Lerman , Emma Watson and Ezra Miller in the lead roles .

action

Charlie is in his freshman year of high school. He is closed and takes a long time to make new friends. So there was only one conversation on the whole first day of school, namely between him and his English teacher, Mr. Anderson. In order not to worry his parents, he doesn't tell them about his true feelings. It is implied that not long ago he had a mental breakdown and is taking psychiatric drugs.

At a football game, he meets his schoolmate Patrick and his stepsister Sam and becomes friends with them. Later, Charlie dances with them at a school event and they take him to a house party where he meets Mary Elizabeth. There he unwittingly eats a hash brownie and entertains those present with his observations. Sam takes him out of the group and Charlie tells her that his best friend took his own life a year ago. He also surprises Patrick with the popular football player Brad while they kiss in a secluded room. Sam realizes that Charlie has no friends and she and Patrick decide to add him to her circle of friends. Charlie offers Sam to help her prepare for her academic aptitude test so she can go to college. On the way home, Sam gets out of the driver's cab in a tunnel and enjoys the ride standing on the back of the pickup while a song can be heard that is referred to as the "tunnel song" for the rest of the film. These are Heroes by David Bowie , which is not mentioned in the film.

For Christmas, Sam gives Charlie a typewriter. The two talk about relationships and it turns out Charlie has never kissed a girl, let alone had a girlfriend. Sam, on the other hand, got her first kiss from her father's boss when she was eleven. She too had a traumatic childhood and was always treated badly by her lovers. Although she now has a boyfriend, she kisses Charlie because she wants him to get his first kiss from someone who loves him. The two confess their love to each other, but later Sam stays with her boyfriend.

Sam, Patrick and all their friends play the Rocky Horror Picture Show at a theater . When Sam's friend Craig is unable to attend a screening, they simply ask Charlie to take over the role. After the show, Mary asks Elizabeth if Charlie would like to accompany her to the Sadie Hawkins dance , to which he agrees. After the ball, she takes him home with her and they kiss. Charlie reluctantly enters into a relationship with her and won't break up with her because he doesn't want to hurt her feelings.

In the relationship between the two, Mary Elisabeth has the reins in hand and Charlie is increasingly annoyed and visibly unhappy. The relationship ends when the gang plays truth or dare one evening . Patrick asks Charlie to kiss the most beautiful woman in the room, whereupon he spontaneously kisses Sam. Patrick drives Charlie home and asks him to stay away from the group until everyone has calmed down. Charlie is now on his own again and not welcome to the others. His mental state is deteriorating. Memories of a traumatic experience flash through him; he has flashbacks of the death of his aunt Helen, who was killed in a car accident when he was seven years old.

When Brad's father catches his son with Patrick, he beats him up. Brad then distances himself from Patrick. Shortly afterwards he insults Patrick in front of his friends in the school cafeteria as a "fagot". Patrick is beside himself and starts a fight with Brad. This ends with three of Brad's buddies giving him sick until Charlie intervenes. Charlie blacked out and can only guess what he did while looking at his swollen ankles and Brad's buddies lying on the floor. He helps Patrick up and warns all those present against laying hands on his friends again. Sam reconciles with Charlie and Mary Elisabeth has overcome the breakup and has a new friend. After separating from Brad, Patrick spends a lot of time with Charlie and lets him comfort him.

Sam breaks up with Craig after finding out he has been unfaithful to her the entire time. She receives an acceptance from her preferred college and gets ready to attend the introductory events there. The night before she leaves, Charlie helps her pack, and Sam asks him why he never asked her on a date. Then Charlie and Sam kiss and when she touches his thigh, Charlie has an irritating flashback from him and his aunt Helen, which is why he interrupts the kiss. After Sam asks him what's going on, he replies with "nothing" and starts kissing her again. The next morning, Charlie says goodbye to Sam and Patrick as they leave for college. Sam and Charlie are finally together and kiss goodbye.

On the way home, Charlie is upset and has severe flashbacks from his aunt Helen. He calls his sister and tells her that he feels responsible for his aunt's death. She immediately notifies the police because she fears that Charlie could take his own life. Charlie is admitted to a clinic and undergoes therapy. It turns out that his aunt sexually abused him as a child and he pushed the memories of it aside. Charlie's parents find out about it from his doctor.

Back home, Sam and Patrick visit him for the holidays. The three of them go back to the restaurant, Sam talks about their life at college and that she found the tunnel song. They drive to the same tunnel and this time Charlie is standing on the loading area.

production

development

Mr. Mudd Productions , the production company, tried to get Stephen Chbosky to film his own book. The film's producers, John Malkovich , Lianne Halfon , and Russell Smith managed to hire Stephen Chbosky as a screenwriter and director. In May 2010, there was speculation about the cast of Logan Lerman and Emma Watson, who were finally confirmed as cast for the roles of Charlie and Sam in February 2011 after Summit Entertainment acquired the film rights the month before. In the months that followed, Mae Whitman , Nina Dobrev and Paul Rudd were confirmed for the roles of Marie-Elizabeth, Candace and Bill (all in April) and Kate Walsh for Charlie's mother on May 9 .

Filming

The film was shot in the Pittsburgh Metropolitan Area from May 9 to June 29, 2011, primarily in the Upper Hill neighborhood, which includes Chbosky's place of residence and the high school featured in the film. Scenes in which the actors appear in the Rocky Horror Picture Show were filmed at the Hollywood Theater in Dormont, the cinema where Chbosky had seen the Rocky Horror Picture Show himself as a teenager. When he found out about the reopening, he decided to shoot the relevant film scenes there.
