Kathleen Erin "Kate" Walsh (born October 13, 1967 in San José , California ) is an American actress .

Life

Walsh grew up in San José and Tucson , Arizona . She is the youngest of five children from an Italian mother and an Irish father. In the 1980s she first worked as a model in Japan . She later attended the University of Arizona , where she appeared on stage for the first time. She then moved to Chicago , where she continued to work as a stage actress. She was also employed by National Public Radio . Walsh later moved to New York City , where she joined a comedy group and appeared on a number of off-Broadway plays.

Her first major television appearance was a supporting role as Nicki Fifer on the Drew Carey Show . Other guest roles such as in the television series The Mind of the Married Man , The Norm Show and CSI: On the trail of the perpetrators followed. She became known to a larger audience through the role of Dr. Addison Montgomery was known in the hit series Grey's Anatomy . From 2007 to 2013 she played this role in the spin-off Private Practice , alongside Amy Brenneman and Paul Adelstein .

Walsh made her movie debut in 1996 in a supporting role in Normal Life . She played other cinema roles in films such as Die Pfeffermühlen (1997) or Under the Tuscan Sun (2004) alongside Diane Lane . She got her first starring role in Football Fever - Penalty for Daddy in 2005, opposite Will Ferrell and Robert Duvall .

In May 2010, Walsh made her off-Broadway debut in Stephen Belber's Dusk Rings a Bell . At the end of the same year, the actress launched her own perfume under the name "Boyfriend".

From September 2007 to December 2008, Walsh was married to Alex Young, co-president of the Production department at 20th Century Fox . She is now in a relationship with comedy writer Chris Case, with whom she sold a semi-autobiographical series to the American television station NBC in October 2012 . A few months earlier, she had announced that the sixth season of Private Practice , which aired in the United States at the time, would be her last. On January 22, 2013, the series finale was broadcast. Since 2017, she has appeared in the Netflix series Dead Girls Don't Lie as Olivia Baker . Since 2019 she has worked as The Handler in the Netflix-produced series The Umbrella Academy .
