Robert Duvall
Robert Selden Duvall (born January 5, 1931 in San Diego , California ) is an American actor and director . He is considered one of the leading American character actors and starred in classic films such as The Godfather and Apocalypse Now . In 1984 he was awarded the Oscar for Best Actor for Love's Comeback .
Life
Robert Selden Duvall is the son of Mildred Virginia, an amateur actress and descendant of General Robert Edward Lee , played by Duvall in the film Gods and Generals , and William Howard Duvall, an admiral in the United States Navy . He was raised in the Christian Science faith and grew up in a military environment. He moved from military base to military base with his father . As a result, he attended several schools in different states. After graduating from Principia College , he served in the United States Army in 1953/1954 ; most recently he had the rank of Private First Class . While serving at the military base Camp Gordon in Georgia he played as an amateur in the theater, for example, in the play room service , it that after his term use of the GI Bill of Rights made to be in New York at the Neighborhood Playhouse School of the To study theater under Sanford Meisner acting. Dustin Hoffman , Gene Hackman and James Caan were his classmates during his two-year apprenticeship . While he financed his studies by working in a post office, he shared a New York apartment with Hoffman.
In the late 1950s, Duvall worked in various theaters and on Broadway . After several roles in television series, he made his feature film debut with Gregory Peck in 1962 in Who the Nightingale Disturbs . At the time he was living in a shared apartment with Gene Hackman and Dustin Hoffman. All three are considered to be important representatives of the New Hollywood movement.
Many films in which Duvall was involved are considered classics, such as The Marshal , Robert Altman's M * A * S * H , The Godfather 1 & 2 , George Lucas ' early work THX 1138 , The great Santini , Comeback of Love , Network and The Indomitable . He was nominated for an Oscar for Francis Ford Coppola's The Godfather and Apocalypse Now as well as for The Great Santini . The HBO production Stalin , in which he played the title role, earned him a Golden Globe Award . In 1984 Duvall received an Oscar for best actor for Comeback of Love .
He also worked in the successful films Deep Impact , Civil Trial , Just 60 Seconds , The 6th Day and John Q - Desperate Wage . He also works as an author, director and musician. In 1977 he first directed the documentary We're Not the Jet Set . 1983 directed Angelo My Love, his first feature film. For the film Apostle! (1997), in which he also played the leading role, he received numerous awards. Two more films followed.
Robert Duvall had no permanent German voice actor for many years, but from around the beginning of the 1970s until the turn of the millennium he was most often spoken by Hartmut Reck and Norbert Langer . Since about 2000, however, Friedrich G. Beckhaus has established himself as Duvall's standard voice.
Private life
Duvall is married for the fourth time. His first three wives were Barbara Benjamin (1964–1975), Gail Youngs (1982–1986) and Sharon Brophy (1991–1996). He has lived with his current wife, Luciana Pedraza , since 1997 , and they married in 2005. Pedraza is exactly 41 years younger than him to the day. Duvall has no children. His cousin Wayne Duvall (* 1958) is also an actor.
Political commitment
Duvall's political views are libertarian and conservative . He was personally invited to George W. Bush's inauguration in 2001. In 2007 he publicly announced his support for the presidential candidacy of Republican Rudolph Giuliani .
On September 7, 2012, Duvall set up a fundraising for Mitt Romney in his house , to which his wife Ann Romney also appeared.
Awards (selection)
For his portrayal of Tom Hagen in Francis Ford Coppola's film The Godfather , he received a nomination for an Oscar for best supporting actor in 1973 , as well as in 1979 for his portrayal of Lieutenant Colonel Kilgore in Apocalypse Now . His enormous creative output during this time was recognized again in 1980 for the great Santini with such a nomination. In 1984 he was finally awarded the Oscar for best actor for the comeback of love . In 1997 there was another nomination as best leading actor for Apostle! , followed by nominations for Best Supporting Actor in 1999 for Civil Procedure and 2015 for The Judge - Justice or Honor .
The American Society of Cinematographers honored him in 1997 with the ASC President's Award for Lifetime Achievement. On September 18, 2003, he received a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame .
In addition, after three unsuccessful nominations in 2007, Duvall was awarded an Emmy for the role of Prentice, Print 'Ritter in the two-part TV series Broken Trail in the category "Best Actor in a Miniseries or a TV Movie" .
