Walter & Frank - A Weird Couple is a 1993 American film.

action

Walter is a single Cuban barber who is retiring in Florida . Frank, a former seaman, was deported by his son to a retirement apartment complex run by the feisty Helen Cooney. It's July and it's very hot. The air conditioning in Frank's living room doesn't work and he seeks cooling in the air-conditioned cinema, where he watches the afternoon shows with the single lady Georgia. In a park by the sea he meets Walter who is doing crossword puzzles there . Frank is a rude, noisy, lonely man who, without being asked, tells his anecdote about how he defeated Ernest Hemingway in a wrestling match in Puerto Rico in 1938 as a young captain . Walter is an elegant old man who never curses and adores the young waitress Elaine. Walter and Frank are completely different old people who still make friends in their loneliness. Walter takes Frank to the fast food place where Elaine is serving. Frank takes Walter on his tandem to admire the fireworks on July 4th, America's Independence Day.

Walter has never been married and Frank brags about his women’s stories, which he still claims to have. While Walter is dancing alone at home and preparing for the annual dance festival, Frank dreams up his last women's adventures. Age affects both of them in different ways. A world collapses for Walter when he learns that his beloved Elaine is getting married and moving. Walter and Frank quarrel over the parting present for Elaine. Both are now realizing how important friends are in life and that both have never had real friends in their lives. As a reconciliation, Frank arranges for Walter the opportunity to meet Elaine again to say goodbye. Walter had dreamed of going to the dance party with Elaine, but is resigned to her marriage plans and leaves his parting present on the table. In order to reconcile himself with Frank, he invites the old sailor to a dance party. When he wants to pick him up from his apartment, he and the landlady, Helen Frank, have slept peacefully. Walter goes to the dance festival alone.

"A sensitive portrait of two retirees who can still do a lot."

- Heyne Film Yearbook 1995

"A film that offers two thoroughbred actors grateful roles and, despite many cliché situations, conveys an empathetic portrait of the old isolated people."
