Lajos Koltai [ ˈlɒjoʃ ˈkoltɒi ] (born April 2, 1946 in Budapest ) is a Hungarian cameraman and film director . He was best known for his work for the Hungarian director István Szabó .

life and work

From 1965 Koltai studied at the Budapest Drama and Film School (Színház- és Filmművészeti Főiskola) with György Illés . At the beginning of his career he was responsible for several films by Márta Mészáros as a cameraman. He became internationally known with his work on Mephisto under the direction of István Szabó . Koltai has lived in the USA since 1987.

In 2005 he presented his first directorial work. He made a film of the autobiographical novel Fateless - the novel of a fateful person by the Hungarian Nobel Prize winner Imre Kertész .
