Hanussen is a biographical film by the Hungarian film director István Szabó from 1988, which deals with the life of the fortune teller Erik Jan Hanussen - played by Klaus Maria Brandauer . The German-Austrian-Hungarian co-production was financed on the German side by CCC-Film under Artur Brauner and ZDF .
action
The platoon leader Klaus Schneider was taken to a hospital during the First World War . There the doctor will find Dr. Bettelheim found out that the tailor, who was being treated for head injuries, had a gift for clairvoyance. After the war he meets Captain Nowotny again, who provided entertainment for the soldiers with a front theater during the war. After changing his name to Erik Jan Hanussen , he suddenly became famous for predicting the sinking of a cruise ship. After an arrest and subsequent trial for imposture, he is acquitted for demonstrating his special skills in court. In Berlin, where he moved with his girlfriend Valery (called Wally) and Nowotny, he is among the "top ten thousand". When the prediction that Adolf Hitler would be appointed Reich Chancellor actually occurs, Nowotny and Wally reproach him seriously for having previously insisted on being an apolitical person. Soon afterwards he rose to become Adolf Hitler's personal fortune teller and did not want to notice that his friend Bettelheim got into trouble because he was Jewish. When he anticipated the fire in the Reichstag , he was declared a traitor by the National Socialists, although many believed him to be a National Socialist, and murdered by the SA on the night of March 24th to 25th, 1933 , to which his Jewish origins probably contributed .
