The CCC Film ( Central Cinema Company ) is a 1946 by Artur Brauner founded in Berlin German film production company .

Foundation and first films

On September 16, 1946, Brauner and Joseph Einstein founded Central Cinema Comp.-Film GmbH with share capital of 21,000 Reichsmarks . Just two months later, Einstein left the company and Brauner became the sole shareholder.

The first film produced by the CCC was the comedy Herzkönig in 1947, directed by Helmut Weiss . The subsequent film Morituri by Eugen York , which told the story of Polish concentration camp refugees, was more ambitious . Morituri , however, was a failure at the box office. With the three films Girls Behind Bars (Director: Alfred Braun ), Man Not Playing with Love (Director: Hans Deppe ) and Five Under Suspicion (Director: Kurt Hoffmann ) produced in 1949, the CCC found its recipe for success for the first time and was in a mixture from drama, crime film and comedic aspects between serious cinema art and entertainment film.


The CCC continued this line at the beginning of the 1950s and, in addition to comedies such as Das Mädel aus der Konfektion (Director: Carl Boese ), also produced dramatic and contemporary films such as Epilog - The Secret of Orplid (Director: Helmut Käutner ), Sinful Border ( Director: RA Stemmle ) and Black Eyes (Director: Géza von Bolváry ). Since the audience preferred light entertainment, the CCC shifted more and more to comedies such as Der chaste Lebemann (1952, director: Carl Boese) and The Robbery of the Sabine Women (1954, director: Kurt Hoffmann) as well as adventure films such as Maharajah Against Will (1950, Director: Ákos von Ráthonyi ) and Stern von Rio (1954, director: Kurt Neumann ) as well as melodramas such as Die Privatsekretärin (1953, director: Paul Martin ) and Liebe ohne Illusion (1955, director: Erich Engel ).

Ambitious projects were The Trace Leads to Berlin (1952, Director: Franz Cap ) and The July 20 (1955, Director: Falk Harnack ). From the mid-1950s onwards, film adaptations of literature supplemented the CCC's product portfolio, such as Die Ratten (1955, director: Robert Siodmak ) after Gerhart Hauptmann , student Helene Willfüer (1956, director: Rudolf Jugert ) after Vicki Baum or Before Sunset (1956, director: Gottfried Reinhardt ) after Gerhart Hauptmann.

As early as 1950, the CCC acquired the site of a research institute for chemical warfare agents in Berlin-Haselhorst and used the existing premises for film production. Five more halls were built there by the end of the 1950s. The site has thus become one of the most modern film studios in Europe. Television companies from the USA took advantage of these opportunities and regularly produced programs there.


The CCC got a new title opening with music by Martin Böttcher , who then wrote the music for ten Karl May films , but for Brauner only the music for Der Schut (1964) and Winnetou and Shatterhand in the Valley of the Dead (1968). Brauner had to make full use of the production capacities he had created and in the 1960s switched to complex large-scale productions and historical dramas such as The Tiger of Eschnapur and The Indian Tomb (1959, directed by Fritz Lang ), Mistress of the World (1960, directed by William Dieterle ), Dschingis Khan (in coproduction with Irving Allen , 1964, directed by Henry Levin ), Die Nibelungen (1966, directed by Harald Reinl ) or Kampf um Rom (1968, directed by Robert Siodmak). Brauner brought emigrated film directors such as Lang, Siodmak, Dieterle and Gerd Oswald back to Germany and relied on the cooperation with experienced American B-filmmakers such as Hugo Fregonese and Russ Meyer .

In the mid-1960s, under the influence of the French Nouvelle Vague, the call for more contemporary films based on personal experience was loud. Brauner then propagated his idea of ​​the “Risky Wave”, but the only attempt at such a project Mensch und Bestie under the direction of Edwin Zbonek failed both artistically and commercially. The CCC shifted back to popular entertainment films and produced several Karl May films : Old Shatterhand and Der Schut (both 1964), The Aztecs' Treasure and its sequel The Pyramid of the Sun God (both 1965) and, in the same year, Durchs wilde Kurdistan and its sequel In the kingdom of the silver lion , for which the star Lex Barker first had to claim his additional fee. One of the most successful film series in Germany came to an end with the CCC production Winnetou and Shatterhand in the Valley of the Dead (1968). In addition, between 1960 and 1964 the company made a small series of films based on the famous Dr Mabuse story, as well as other crime films, including The Curse of the Yellow Snake (1963) based on Edgar Wallace, and several films based on his son Bryan Edgar in the wake of the successful film series Wallace . As early as 1965, Brauner had to reduce the size of his studio space considerably when ZDF stopped producing there and moved completely to Mainz.

Since the 1970s

In 1970 Vittorio De Sica's CCC film Der Garten der Finzi Contini ( Il Giardino dei Finzi-Contini ) won the Oscar for Best Foreign Language Film , which was co-produced by the Italian film company Documento Film .

At the beginning of the 1970s Brauner closed his studios and laid off the last 85 employees. The studios continue to exist and are still in operation under the name Filmatelier Haselhorst . Instead of a continuous film production, Brauner switched to individual projects with the CCC such as: You are free, Dr. Korczak (1974, Aleksander Ford ), Eine Liebe in Deutschland (1983, Andrzej Wajda ) or Hanussen (1988, István Szabó). Artur Brauner's daughter Alice has been responsible for the renovation of the CCC film studios in Haselhorst since mid-2015 . The dark red facade color can be seen from afar. After that, she was able to land her first coup: The entire studio portion of the first German Netflix series Dark was shot entirely in the CCC film studios at the beginning of 2017.
