Vassilis Photopoulos
Vassilis Photopoulos ( Greek Βασίλης Φωτόπουλος , * 1934 in Kalamata ; † January 14, 2007 in Athens ) was a Greek painter , director and set designer . In 1964 he won the Oscar for the artistic direction of Alexis Sorbas .
Life
Vassilis Photopoulos studied painting under Vangelis Drakos . For the first time he worked as a set designer at the Athens Opera House for the play "Servant Lady", later he worked for the National Greek Theater , the Public Theater of Northern Greece and the Liberal Theater .
Between 1963 and 1966 he was involved in three feature films as artistic director; next to Alexis Sorbas , for whom Photopoulos won the Oscar , these were Big Boy - Now You're a Man by Francis Ford Coppola , who was nominated for the Golden Globe for Best Comedy in 1966 , and The Indomitable by Elia Kazan , who was best in 1963 Film was nominated for both an Oscar and a Golden Globe . Photopoulos had designed around 75 sets for The Indomitable , but director Kazan had him removed from the credits, instead only Gene Callahan was named, who then accepted the Oscar for best set design.
In 1969 he was director and producer of the film Orestis after Euripides , about the son of Agamemnon and Clytaimnestra , king of Mycenae , Argos and Sparta .
