Khao Phing Kan ( Thai : เขา พิง กัน , literally leaning rock ) is an island in Phang-nga Bay in southern Thailand . Khao Phing Kan has become known as the “James Bond Island” and through the Khao Ta-Pu rock needle in front of it .

geography

location

The island is located in the district ( amphoe ) Takua Thung in the province of Phang-nga . It originally consisted of a large rock, which then broke in two. The smaller part has slipped down, the larger part seems to be leaning on its side.

The island with green overgrown rocks rising up to 300 meters vertically, perforated by caves and grottoes, is part of the Ao Phang-nga National Park (Thai: อุทยานแห่งชาติ อ่าว พังงา ). The island as well as the rest of Phang Nga Bay with its bizarre limestone cliffs and emerald green sea has been shaped by wind, weather, ocean currents and earth movements over the past 100 million years . The impressive weathering forms arose from intensive karst processes in tropical latitudes.

climate

In the area of the Bay of Phang Nga there is a tropical marine climate, which is characterized by frequent rainfall but stable temperatures between 23 and 32 ° C. According to the data collected between 1961 and 1990, there are an average of 189 rainy days per year with 3560 millimeters of precipitation. The average relative humidity is 83%.

Special

In front of the island is Khao Ta-Pu (Thai: เขา ตะปู - literally nail rock , also Ko Ta-Pu, เกาะ ตะปู - nail island ), a rock needle that has become world-famous as the " James Bond rock". In 1974 Roger Moore landed as Her Majesty's secret agent in The Man with the Golden Gun in front of the impressive backdrop of the island.
