Kalamata ( Greek Καλαμάτα ( f. Sg. )), The ancient Pharai , is the center of the Greek regional district Messenia on the Peloponnese peninsula . The city is known for the export of olives . The “Kalamon” variety owes its name to the city.
Location and appearance
Kalamata is the largest port in Messinia. It lies in the shadow of the castle, which was built in the 13th century by the Frankish crusaders under William II of Villehardouin ; a small Byzantine church still stands on its northern flank .
The city's name probably comes from the reeds ( καλάμι kalámi ) of the Nedon River or one of the churches dedicated to Panagia Kalomata. The city was first mentioned under this name in 1142 in a document about Saint Nikon of Crete .
Below the castle is the old town and the Kalogreon nunnery , where famous silk fabrics are woven. Of the many churches in Kalamata, the Apostle Church from the 11th and 13th centuries is the oldest. In addition, the city has an archaeological and a folklore -Museum, an art gallery and a library with 60,000 volumes including some rare editions.
history

The beginning of the struggle for freedom against the Turks was officially announced in the Apostle Church on March 23, 1821 . A battle had broken out the day before.
On 28/29 In April 1941, shortly before the end of the Balkan campaign , British and Greek troops fought against Wehrmacht troops . About 1700 of them ended up in German captivity; many others were evacuated from Kalamata by the Royal Navy .
