The community Notia Kynouria ( pronunciation : [ ˈnɔtja kʲinuˈria ], Greek Νότια Κυνουρία ( f. Sg. ) 'South Kynouria') was created on January 1, 2011 from the merger of three communities in the extreme southeast of Arcadia . It corresponds to the southern half of the Kynouria province , which was dissolved in 1997 , the area of which corresponds approximately to the ancient landscape of Kynuria and which was then divided into four communities. Notia Kynouria extends on the east coast of Arcadia south of the neighboring municipality of Voria Kynouria and has its seat in the small town of Leonidi . It is located on the eastern flank of the Parnon Mountains , which slopes east to the Myrtoic Sea . The Dafnon River comes from the Parnon and lies around three kilometers above the Leonidi estuary.

In the northern part of Notia Kynouria the ancient Greek dialect Tsakonian has been preserved.

Community structure

The 16 municipalities that existed until 1997 have had the status of an urban district (Ez. Gr. Dimotiki kinotita ) - namely Leonidi - or of local communities (topiki kinotita) since 2011 and elect a council or an individual representative as local representative, depending on the number of inhabitants. The population figures come from the results of the 2011 census.
