Sikyona ( pronunciation : [ sikiˈɔna ], Greek Σικυώνα ( f. Sg. ), Katharevousa Sikyon Σικυών) is a municipality in the north of the Greek peninsula Peloponnese . Their municipal area was last significantly enlarged in 2011 through the incorporation of two neighboring municipalities. The municipality, which had 22,794 inhabitants in 2011, has its seat in the city of Kiato (9812 inhabitants).

Name and administrative history

The community is named after the ancient polis of Sikyon . Their remains are located about one kilometer west of the village of Vasiliko, which was renamed Sikyon ( Dimotiki Sikyona ) in 1920 and raised to a rural community ( Kinotita Sikyonos Κοινότητα Σικυώνος). The much larger rural community of Kiato ( Kinotita Kiatou Κοινότητα Κιάτου) on the coast was officially renamed Sikyon ( Dimos Sikyonos Δήμος Σικυώνος) on the occasion of the upgrade to urban municipality in 1946 . During the implementation of the Kapodistrias program in 1997, these two 'Sikyones' were merged with another 15 rural communities to form the new urban municipality of Sikyon ( Dimos Sikyonion Δήμος Σικυων ,ων, literally 'community of the Sikyons'), which in the implementation of the Kallikratis Act 2011, as Stymfalia and Feneos were incorporated, the community name remained.

Sikyona is located on the Gulf of Corinth , around 20 kilometers northwest of the city of Corinth. A relatively short coastal strip near Kiato is contrasted by a mountainous region that extends deep into the interior of the peninsula. The narrow coastal plain, in which the municipality of Sikyona is located, initially rises hilly to the southwest into the Peloponnesian mountainous region. Further to the south-west is the second highest point in the Peloponnese with the summit of Ziria ( 2374  m ) in the municipality . The municipal districts of Feneos and Stymfalia are located around two plateaus on the west and south flanks of this massif and each have a karst basin ( Polje ) in the center: Stymfalia (ecosystem) and Feneos (plateau) . The only major river in the municipality is the Corinthian Asopos , which flows into the Corinthian Gulf south of Kiato.

In urban areas - mainly in the places on the coast - 6.025 km² (10% of the municipality area).

Attractions

In addition to the archaeological site of ancient Sikyon, the acropolis of the ancient city of Titanē is another relic from ancient times. In addition to the natural beauties of the mountain landscapes, the monastery of Panagia Lechovas in Kryoneri is a testament to Byzantine church architecture.

Economy and Infrastructure

More than half of the municipality's income is generated in the primary sector : Fruit growing is predominant (wine, raisin production, olives, citrus fruits, etc.), but livestock farming also plays a role. Tourism (especially domestic) is becoming increasingly important; There are numerous holiday apartments on the coast. In the summer time, the population in the coastal towns triples. The nature reserve Stymfalia and the remains of ancient Sikyon are also of tourist relevance .

The Athens National Observatory operates a reflecting telescope at Ziria .

Kiato is well connected to the Athens metropolitan area by the S-Bahn-like Proastiakos ; the drive to Athens airport is a good one and a half hours. The extension of the route to Patras  , around 100 km to the west, is under construction.

The Greek A 8 , which has already been completed between Athens and Corinth, runs parallel to the train route . From here the A 7 branches off in Corinth , which opens up the east and south of the Peloponnese and the Argolis .

Community structure

The 16 municipalities that existed until 1997 have had the status of an urban district (Ez. Gr. Dimotiki kinotita ) - namely Kiato - or of local communities (topiki kinotita) since 2011 and elect a council or an individual representative as local representative, depending on the number of inhabitants. The population figures come from the results of the 2011 census.
