The Gamla bankhuset is a yellow, two-story stone building in the Swedish city of Umea . It is located at 34 Storgatan. The building was built in the neo-renaissance style and is classified by the Swedish state as of cultural and historical value . Because of its rounded corners, it is nicknamed Smörasken ( lunch box ).

The building

The building is made of stone and corresponds to a typical Renaissance style. It was built in 1877 based on a plan by Axel Cederberg from Väg- och vattenbyggnadskåren . Cederberg was the city's technical advisor at the time. The building has two floors and is painted yellow. Originally the counter hall and offices were on the ground floor, the upper floor was set up for the bank manager. This contained a large apartment and a room for bachelors .

history

The Gamla bankhuset was the first bank building of the Westerbottens enskilda banks . After the great fire of Umeå in 1888, it became possible to build a new bank building, which was more central and had a more representative position. In 1894 the bank moved its office to the new bank building on the east side of Rådhusparken. Today the commercial banks are located there . Instead, the old building was used as an apartment building. Over time it was used for a variety of purposes, including as a temporary warehouse for the collection of the Västerbottens Museum from 1936 to 1946 and from 1935 to 1954 by the city library. Since 1980, it has been on the list of buildings classified as Byggnadsminne (architectural monument). The Gamla bankhuset belongs Umeå Energi , which in 1992 was to carry out extensive restoration work.
