history
The city was founded in 1836 in the southern area of the ancient city of the same name at the instigation of the Wittelsbach king Otto I of Greece . In its function as a scenic center, it replaced the town of Mistra , which had become largely uninhabitable during the wars of liberation. Otto I had the city built in memory of the polis of ancient Greece at this point and with this name by a Bavarian architect. The street network is laid out like a chessboard with exceptionally wide streets and squares. The mayor of Sparta has been the Nea Dimokratia for decades .
