The Asopos ( Greek Ασωπός ) is the most important river in the Korinthia regional district , Peloponnese . It flows south of Kiato into the Gulf of Corinth .

The westernmost source rises in Farmakas -Gebirge (Φαρμακάς, Φέκριζα, Alea) It flows in a westerly direction, taking in Aidonia (Αηδόνια) to 300 meters above sea level, a major tributary of the south from the Megalovouni (Μεγαλοβούνι) and at Nemea (Νεμέα ) another, the main source of which arises south of Nemea at a Profitis Elias (Προφήτης Ηλίας).

From there it turns to the north and winds through a narrow valley, reaching a height of 200 m at Dafni (Δάφνη) and at Bathiza Poulion (Μπάθιζα Ποθλαίων), it meets the ridge of the Xerokasteli (Ξερκαστέλι), which deflects it to the east becomes. At Sikyon (Σικυών) it reaches the coastal plain, which it crosses in an easterly direction and flows into the sea between Kiato and Nerandza (Νεράντζα). It extends over approx. 45 km.

At Aidonia there is the important burial ground Aidonia with graves from Mycenaean times .

mythology

According to classical tradition, the Asopos is said to be a continuation of the meander in Asia Minor. Marsyas' flutes were thrown on its bank after the competition with Apollon was over and Marsyas was punished for his arrogance.
