Kiato ( Greek Κιάτο ( n. Sg. )) Is a small town and seat of the municipality of Sikyona in the Greek region of Peloponnese . It is located 22 km west of Corinth .

geography

Kiato lies on a narrow strip of coastal plain in the Peloponnese . The Peloponnesian mountain range rises in the south just 1.5 km away. The only major river in the municipality is the Corinthian Asopos , which flows into the Corinthian Gulf south of Kiato.

Upstream locations are: Kato Diminio (Κάτω Διμηνιo), Kokkinia (Κοκκινιά), Pasio (Πάσιο), Dourvationa (Δουρβατιώνα), Velo (Βέλο) and Nerantza (Νεράντζα).

economy

The city's economy relies primarily on trade. The location on the Gulf of Corinth and near Athens attracts many beach holidaymakers in summer.

Attractions

Sights of the place include the grove of the Blessed Virgin of Kiato (αλσύλλιο της Παναγίας Κιάτου) with the excavation site of an early Christian basilica from the 5th century. In addition, there are archaeological remains of ancient Sikyon and the museum (Αρχαίας Σικυώνας, Βασιλικ etwa) about 4 km southwest of the city. The city itself existed under the name Sikyon ( Greek Σικυών ) since the Mycenaean period and was between the 6th and 2nd centuries BC. Well known after Kleisthenes of Sikyon was the tyrant of the city. At that time, great artists like the sculptor Lysipp grew up in the city . The city's ancient theater has survived to this day, where ancient dramas are performed every summer.

traffic

Kiato has been well connected to the Athens metropolitan area since 2004 by the S-Bahn-like Proastiakos ; the drive to Athens airport is a good one and a half hours. The extension of the route to Patras , around 100 km to the west, is under construction. The Greek A 8 , which has already been completed between Athens and Corinth, runs parallel to the train route . From here the A 7 branches off in Corinth , which opens up the east and south of the Peloponnese and the Argolis . Bus connections to Corinth and Patras are also well developed.
