The Dystos Lake ( Greek Λίμνη Δύστος , f. Sg.) Is a lake on Euboea . It is located southeast of Aliveri and covers 4.75 km², its greatest depth is 6 m. In the last few years the lake has dried up due to water abstraction by the nearby AGET-Iraklis (ΑΓΕΤ-ΗΡΑΚΛΗΣ) cement works . It is believed that the lake was formed by subsidence and that it partially drains into the southern Gulf of Evia . It got its name from the ancient city of the same name (αρχαία Δύστος), which lay on its bank. Archaeological research has shown that as early as the 4th century BC Chr. Drainage systems were built. The lake is an important bird sanctuary (Ζώνη Ειδικής Προστασίας) and has been on the list of Natura 2000 habitats since 2000 . The closest settlements around the lake are Prasino (Πράσινο Ευβοίας) in the west, Dystos (Δύστος Ευβοίας) in the north and Koskina (Κόσκινα Ευβοίας) in the east.
