Leonidi ( Greek Λεωνίδι ( n. Sg. ), Katharevousa : Leonidion ) is a small town with just under 4000 inhabitants in Arcadia on the Peloponnese in Greece .
Until 2010 Leonidi was an independent municipality, since 1947 a town municipality (dimos), which had grown to about 6000 inhabitants through incorporation in 1997. On January 1, 2011, the municipality of Leonidi merged into the newly created municipality of Notia Kynouria , where it has since formed a municipality and is the administrative seat.
Leonidi lies on the edge of the estuary of the Daphnon River, around four kilometers from the coast of the Myrtoic Sea . The fishing and harbor town belonging to Leonidi is called Plaka.
The old Doric dialect Tsakonian has been preserved in remote mountain villages of the Parnon Mountains in the triangle Leonidi- Astros - Sparta .
About seven kilometers from the main town is the mountain monastery Moni Agiou Nikolaou Syndzas built in a rock face .
The German classical philologist and linguist Michael Deffner (1848–1934) is an honorary citizen of Leonidi.
