Michael Deffner

Joseph Michael Deffner ( Greek Μιχαήλ Δέφνερ , born September 18, 1848 in Donauwörth ; † October 15, 1934 in Athens ) was a German classical philologist and linguist who devoted himself particularly to the study of the Tsakonian dialect .

After studying Classical Philology and Linguistics in Munich and Leipzig , Deffner went to Athens as a Latin teacher in 1871 . From 1872 to 1878 he was a private lecturer in comparative linguistics at the University of Athens . On behalf of the Berlin Academy of Sciences , he traveled to the Peloponnese from 1874 to study the Maniotic and Tsakonian dialects . Apart from a few archaeological works, he kept returning to the Peloponnese to research tsakonic. In the summer of 1876 he was sent from the Berlin Academy to Trebizond to study Pontic . From 1877 to 1910 he was director of the Greek National Library in Athens.

He carried out archaeological excavations on the Methana peninsula and Skyros . Among other things, he described an ancient "divine throne" from the Throni plateau on Methana. He published his research results mainly in the Athenische Mitteilungen . The photographic documentation about Methana is now partially stored in the German Archaeological Institute in Athens .

Deffner was editor of the archive for Middle and Modern Greek philology , the journal Bezzenberger's contributions and the German-Greek newspaper Νέα Ελλάς .

Deffner is an honorary citizen of Leonidi in the Peloponnese .
